Horse Shelter Heroes – Episode 21 – May 14 – 20
Birthdays at the shelter aren’t just about cake and candles—they’re about celebration, creativity, and a whole lot of love. This week’s episode of Horse Shelter Heroes delivered all of that and more as the team pulled off a surprise birthday makeover for Miss Tawnee while continuing their lifesaving work for the horses.
Operation: Surprise!
The crew went all-out to give Miss Tawnee the birthday she deserved. Shelby and the team spent the day blowing up what felt like a mountain of balloons—375 to be exact—and covering every inch of her office with “Happy Birthday” sticky notes. Confetti-filled balloons, banners, and a desk completely transformed into a rainbow of sticky notes made for a priceless reaction when she walked in.
And the surprise didn’t stop there…
A Gift With Heart
Miss Tawnee opened a thoughtful package from a supporter—a birthday card paired with a $1,000 donation for the horses. Moments like this are not only touching, they help keep the shelter running and the horses safe. Her birthday wish? Something even bigger than balloons:
“I wish everyone who watches this episode would donate one panel to help improve our fencing.”
Each $75 panel helps improve safe, sturdy enclosures for the horses who call the shelter home, and thanks to amazing supporters, 50 panels were funded!
Trail Rides & Tender Care
The episode also followed Tawnee and Jessie on a peaceful trail ride with Roseland and Hearts on Fire. Hearts on Fire, true to his name, was full of get-up-and-go and loved every minute.
Afterward, the team sent a special postcard to a young girl who donated her birthday money to help horses. Every signature from the staff was a reminder that generosity comes in all sizes, and inspires everyone here.
Dr. E stopped by to run blood tests for PPID (Cushing’s), helping diagnose and track horses with long coats, weight loss, and other symptoms. This kind of care ensures each horse gets the customized support they need.
New Arrivals & New Beginnings
With the shelter officially reopened by appointment, owner surrenders are coming in again. This week the team welcomed a sweet Lusitano named Carrot, who is beginning his new chapter with us.

Fundraising has already started, with the USDA export report included on posts to show the hard truth, these horses truly need rescuing. Every share, comment, and donation makes a direct impact.
