Horse Shelter Heroes – S4E13

At Horse Plus Humane Society, no two days are ever the same but this week was especially full of purpose, teamwork, and heart. As the team prepared for a major mentoring workshop, the property buzzed with activity, volunteers stepped up to help, rescued animals received care and training, and organizations from across the country gathered to learn how to save more horses.
Here’s a look at what made this week unforgettable.

Getting the Property Ready

The week kicked off with a massive push to get the facility organized before dozens of organizations arrived for mentoring. Trailers were moved and cleaned, the grounds were picked up, and the Horse Plus sign was rebuilt and mounted on new posts to welcome visitors. Even with one of their main trucks in the shop, the team kept things moving and made sure everything was organized.
Volunteers Step In

Volunteer day brought more than ten helpers who made a big impact. They cleaned buckets and water troughs, washed rescue trailers, and even helped groom a few horses. Their hard work helped the team stay on track during an already busy week.
Training for a Better Future

Training also continued with rescued horses like Harvest. Through groundwork exercises such as flexion, hindquarter movement, and head lowering, trainers help build trust and prepare horses for riding and adoption.
This foundation work is essential to ensuring rescued horses are safe, confident, and ready for their next homes.
A Special Visitor Returns

This week also brought a meaningful reunion. Carrie from Colorado Horse Rescue Network returned to participate in the mentoring program. Carrie had previously been part of the program and overcame major personal challenges, making her return incredibly special for everyone involved.
She arrived with horses for the adoption program and before leaving, more animals would be transferred between the organizations to help them find the best possible homes.
A Challenging Donkey Transfer

Rescue work isn’t always easy and often requires patience and teamwork. While preparing animals for transfer, the team had a challenge loading a donkey named Churro, who refused to get into the trailer and even broke a halter.

With persistence and plenty of helping hands, the team eventually got Churro safely loaded—a reminder that rescue work often takes flexibility and determination.
Building the Network to End Slaughter

The highlight of the week was seeing 20 organizations “glued” to the presentations on equine nutrition and medical care. The goal is simple but massive: build a stronger network to end horse slaughter forever. Seeing the passion in these rescuers’ eyes makes every long hour worth it.

We are exhausted, inspired, and so grateful for your support! Whether it’s donating grooming blocks or volunteering your Saturday, you are the reason these horses (and puppies… and grumpy donkeys) have a second chance!
Looking Ahead

After an incredibly busy week, the team at Horse Plus finally had a moment to catch their breath.
But the impact of this workshop is only just beginning.

Over the coming months, the mentoring program will continue as participating rescues put their new knowledge into action, saving more horses and improving animal welfare across the country.
And here at Horse Plus, the work continues every single day.
Because for rescued horses, every effort matters and every life saved is worth it.
