One Day Shelter for Hickman County
With no county animal services in place, Hickman County faced a growing crisis of stray and unwanted animals. Partnering with the county mayor, Horse Plus stepped up to host a free one day surrender event offering safe surrenders, low cost rabies vaccines, microchipping, and humane euthanasia for suffering pets.
The response was overwhelming.
By the end of the day, 68 animals had been helped including 54 dogs, 12 cats, one goat, and one horse. Many received vaccines and microchips so families could keep their beloved pets safe. Others were surrendered so they could receive medical care and a second chance at adoption.
It was cold. It was busy. It was all hands on deck. And it mattered.
The Work Continues
The next morning, the veterinary team jumped straight into spays and neuters, disease screening and intake exams. Every surrendered animal began the process toward a healthier future.
Meanwhile, farrier work kept the horses comfortable, and even a little barn humor broke out when staff attempted a creative repair on a broken horse decoration. Rescue life is serious work, but laughter keeps everyone going.
Medical Moments Big & Small
From checking fevers during ongoing strangles monitoring to ultrasounding a mare to rule out pregnancy, the team handled it all. Whether it is infectious disease control, routine care, or complex diagnostics, no detail is overlooked.
