Horse Shelter Heroes – S7E7

No two days are ever the same here at Horse Plus Humane Society. In this episode of Horse Shelter Heroes, we faced heartbreak, hope, mud, emergencies and miracles all in one powerful day.
Since 2003, when we started this rescue with a mission to stop horses from shipping to slaughter, we have helped save more than 15,000 precious lives. Our mission has never changed. We will always rescue, shelter and protect the helpless.
This episode shows exactly what that looks like.

12 Lives Off the Trailer

We welcomed 12 horses through our buyout program. As they stepped off the trailer, it was clear many of them needed immediate help. Some were blind. Some had visible wounds. Others showed signs of long term neglect and structural issues.

We carefully moved each horse through intake. Microchipping. X-rays. Vaccinations. Pain medication. Food and fresh water. Full veterinary exams.
It is never easy to see animals arrive in this condition. But because of your support, we are able to say yes when they need us most.
The Wisdom of an Old Mustang

Among the new arrivals is an older gelding who quietly reveals a surprise. After examining his teeth and completing his evaluation, we discovered he carries a Mustang tattoo.

Despite his age, he is sound, respectful and full of quiet dignity. His heart and lungs are strong. His x-rays look good. He simply needs a chance.
We truly believe senior horses have so much wisdom to offer. Age is not a flaw. It is a gift.
A Sick Little Red Mare

A five year old red mare arrives with thick nasal discharge and eye drainage. Though her lungs still sound clear, she is clearly battling an upper respiratory infection.
The team vaccinates her to protect against additional illness and sends off diagnostics to identify the cause. Early intervention gives her the best chance at a full recovery.
Major and Harold’s Checkups

Major, the mud loving problem child, has been limping. The team performs radiographs and a full evaluation to rule out anything serious. Thankfully, compared to many incoming cases, he is in great shape!

Harold, a young donkey who has been lying down more than usual, also receives x-rays and bloodwork. With castration scheduled soon, we want to ensure he is completely healthy before anesthesia. Every detail matters.
A Tiny Goat’s Emergency C Section

We also took in a very young goat who had been bred far too early. X-rays showed her baby was too large to deliver safely. She needed an emergency C section.
The veterinary team moves quickly into surgery.

The procedure goes smoothly, and to everyone’s surprise, the baby still has a heartbeat. What follows is an intense effort to stimulate breathing oxygen, rubbing, fluids, nonstop encouragement. As long as there is a heartbeat, there is hope.
This is what rescue looks like. Exhausting. Emotional. Worth it.
Orphaned Kittens & Happy Adoptions

In the middle of emergencies, life keeps moving.
Tulip, one of our border collie puppies, found her forever home. Two orphaned kittens arrived after losing their mother and now require round the clock bottle feeding every two hours.
From horses to goats to dogs to kittens, we are here for them all.
Training for the Future

We also continued training work with Rudolph, helping him build confidence under saddle. Rescue is just step one. Rehabilitation and preparation for adoption are just as important so each animal can succeed in their next chapter.
What This Episode Really Shows

Some days bring adoptions. Some bring emergencies. Most bring both.
There are muddy stalls to clean. Medical charts to review. Babies to resuscitate. Frightened horses to reassure.
Behind every task is a team that refuses to look away from suffering.

In a perfect world, Horse Plus Humane Society would not need to exist.
But until that day comes, we will keep showing up for the blind, the sick, the elderly, the unwanted and the overlooked.
Because every life matters. And we will never stop fighting for them.
