At Horse Plus Humane Society, no two days are ever the same and this episode of Horse Shelter Heroes proves just how much heart, hustle and hope goes into every rescue.
The day kicks off with behind-the-scenes improvements to the shelter itself, making sure both animals and staff stay comfortable. But it’s not long before the real work begins, caring for animals who need a second chance.

Office Hacks & Sparks Flying
Jason kicked things off with a little “barn engineering.” With 11-foot ceilings, all the expensive heat was trapped at the top while the team shivered below. Armed with a saw and some determination, Jason installed a new fan system to push that warm air down where it belongs.
Meanwhile, in the office, the team celebrated a massive tech upgrade with a new Mac Studio to replace the old “blue screen of death” computer… meaning better, faster videos for all of you!
Dusty Finds His Forever Humans
There wasn’t a dry eye in the house when a wonderful family with three kids came to meet Dusty the kitten. After a sweet meet-and-greet, it was clear that Dusty had “chosen” his humans.
The kids were over the moon to move his photo from Looking for Love to Found Love on our adoption wall!
Critical Care in Quarantine
Up in quarantine, the veterinary team dives into detailed exams for newly rescued horses. From routine checks to complex diagnostics, every horse gets the attention they deserve.
Some, like Sunny, are cleared for a bright future, while others, like Ragnar, face more serious health challenges… reminding us that compassion sometimes means making the hardest decisions.
Emergency: Cinder is “Cast”
The team faced a tense and frightening moment when they discovered Cinder wedged between a hay feeder and a wall, a dangerous situation known as being “cast.” She had likely been struggling for hours, leaving her dehydrated, exhausted and at risk for serious complications.
With calm precision, the team administered pain medication and carefully worked to reposition her. After a few anxious moments, Cinder finally pushed herself back onto her feet, an incredible relief for everyone involved!
Thanks to the shelter’s new in-house blood machine, the team was able to quickly assess her condition on the spot. The results brought a wave of relief: no signs of permanent nerve damage or dangerous imbalances. Now on antibiotics and steadily regaining her strength, Cinder is up, walking, and on the road to recovery.
More Found Love: Fiesta & Black Beauty
Two of our long-term residents finally hit the jackpot this week, proving that every horse has a perfect match waiting for them.
Fiesta has officially begun her new chapter after a long road to recovery. After healing from a previous injury, she met her new mom, Michelle, who has a special heart for “oddball” rescues.
While Fiesta stayed true to her spirited nature by being a little sassy during her grooming session, it was clearly love at first sight for both of them. Michelle proudly rang the adoption bell and Fiesta is now happily headed to her forever home.
Black Beauty, our timid but stunning boy, also found his person during a wonderful adoption appointment. Though he is famous around here for his obsession with mud puddles and his expert “catch me if you can” games in the pasture, his new owner wasn’t deterred by his playful antics.
They are fully prepared to give him the time, space and patience he requires to truly shine, ensuring this beautiful soul finally has the quiet stability he deserves.
A Sweet Treat for the Team
A huge shoutout to Diane, who sent the team a box of delicious vegan cupcakes! It’s small acts of kindness like this that keep our staff fueled and smiling through the long days of rescue work.
