Horse Shelter Heroes – S4E15

The energy at Horse Plus Humane Society has been electric this week. From the quiet, emotional moments of a long-term resident finally stepping onto a trailer for their forever home to the high-stakes intensity of a massive veterinary mission in the Southwest, every second has been driven by a singular purpose. We are constantly reminded that while these animals come to us broken or misunderstood, their resilience is the true engine of this organization.

A New Chapter for the Specials

Adoption day is always a whirlwind of nerves and joy, but this week felt particularly impactful. We watched Solstice and Bandit, two horses who many might overlook due to medical complexities, find a home where those challenges are seen as opportunities.

Solstice, who manages a stringhalt condition, is transitioning into an educational role where he will teach children the nuances of caring for a medically complex horse.

Meanwhile, Bandit, who is completely blind, is beginning a journey with a young trainer who believes he has a future in the show ring. These are the stories that define our mission.

The departures didn’t stop there. Avalon, a stunning blind draft-cross, finally met her match in an adopter who plans to use her as a trail horse and a living advocate for blind horse capabilities.

Close behind her was Misty, a young horse previously labeled as unhandleable. She is now in an environment where daily, one-on-one patience will replace her fear with confidence. Seeing these loving horses find people who see their worth is why we show up every day.
Impact on the Navajo & Hopi Nations

While the shelter was busy with adoptions, a team headed out to Arizona for a massive field clinic. Working across the Navajo and Hopi Nations, we witnessed an incredible partnership between our staff, veterinary students, and local owners.

This wasn’t just about routine care; it was about providing life-saving interventions in the field. From complex dental work and castrations to a harrowing procedure to remove a six-inch stick from a horse’s hindquarters, the team worked like a well-oiled machine.

This mission served a dual purpose by providing hands-on experience for veterinary students who often spend their entire education focused on small animals. By exposing them to the rescue side of equine medicine, we are helping shape a more compassionate and skilled future for the entire industry.
The sheer volume of horses helped over eighty in just a few days, speaks to the desperate need and the incredible gratitude of the communities we served.
The Strength of Community

Impact doesn’t always happen on the trail, sometimes it happens in a school hallway. A local student named Amari reminded us all that passion has no age limit.
For a school service project, she set up collection points at her school and a local Tractor Supply. Through flyers and community outreach, she gathered food, treats, and toys for the shelter animals.
Dog food. Puppy food. Cat treats. Toys.
Small actions that make a real difference. The next generation of animal advocates is already stepping up.

Behind every successful adoption and mission trip is the steady hand of our administrative team. Christy, our bookkeeper and HR lead, has been the financial backbone of the organization since 2022.
Her dedication to the vision of Horse Plus, ensuring a support system is within a day’s drive of anyone in the United States, is what allows our field teams to focus on the animals. It is a collective effort of trainers, administrators and donors that keeps the shelter open.
