Standing Up for Horses in D.C.

Our mission took us all the way to the nation’s capital! We spent the week meeting with representatives to push for the PAST Act and the SAFE Act. Our goal? To end horse slaughter once and for all.
We’re dreaming of a day when “slaughter pipeline rescues” are a thing of the past and we can focus entirely on helping horses find their forever families, just like dogs and cats.
Miracle Grants & Medical Milestones

The veterinary team has been working overtime and we are kicking things off with a massive thank you to the Unwanted Horse Veterinary Relief Campaign!
Their incredible donation of $1,000 in vaccines means 20 of our residents are now fully protected and one step closer to their forever homes.

The medical wins don’t stop there. Our sweet girl Cranberry gave us a bit of a scare with a choking episode but our vets successfully cleared the blockage and she is recovering beautifully, even if soaked snacks are on her menu for the foreseeable future.

Meanwhile, tiny Finnick, our 4.5-pound powerhouse, conquered a complex surgery for a retained testicle and is bouncing back like a champ.

We also checked in with Drifter, who received joint injections and a dental float to smooth out his stride. We are so hopeful that he’ll be sound and ready for a riding home in no time!
Leveling Up: The New Obstacle Course

Beyond the clinic, it’s time to get dusty because we are officially revamping our Obstacle Course. This project is a total game-changer featuring everything from water obstacles and giant pyramids to trailer-loading simulators designed to build horse confidence.
We’re even looking into opening it up to the public down the road! To make this vision a reality, we need your help sourcing “fill” materials. If you have giant tractor tires or railroad ties you’d like to donate, please give us a call and help us build something amazing for our rescues!
A Legacy Left Behind: The Bob Barker Estate

We have been sitting on a secret and it is finally time to let you in on the big news! In a moment that truly humbled our entire team, Horse Plus Humane Society was named as a beneficiary in the estate of the legendary Bob Barker.
We are deeply honored to receive $100,000 to carry on his life’s work and ensure his passion for animal welfare lives on through our mission.
In his memory, we are launching three major initiatives that will change the future for animals in our region. First, we are building a brand-new, off-site Spay/Neuter Clinic to directly tackle the issue of unwanted animal populations in our community.

We are also repurposing a building to create a dedicated Education Center where we can inspire and train the next generation of animal advocates.
Finally, we are dedicating our massive new Obstacle Course to him, providing our horses with the skills they need to find their forever homes faster. It is a beautiful way to honor a man who gave so much to those without a voice.
Happy Tails & Fond Farewells

Finally, the best part of the job: Adoptions! We said happy trails to Tails the bunny and Bobo the dog! Plus, four of our adorable puppies and dogs were transferred to partner shelters to find their forever homes in Nashville.

We also have some exciting staff news! Emily is stepping up as our new Receptionist and Small Animal Intake Coordinator while Caitlyn is following her heart back to animal medicine as our new Vet Assistant.
Thank you for being part of this journey with us. Whether it’s a donation, a share or a prayer for a sick horse, you make this work possible!
