Horse Shelter Heroes – S6E21

Some days at Horse Plus Humane Society are filled with celebration. Others remind us why this work is so important. This week’s episode of Horse Shelter Heroes brought both heartbreak and hope as the team cared for sick animals, welcomed new arrivals, and faced difficult decisions during another challenging buyout day!
Caring for Sago Lily & a Surprise Mama-to-Be

The week started with a health update on Sago Lily after she developed nasal discharge. Testing identified a bacterial infection with low zoonotic potential and treatment was started immediately to help her recover.

Meanwhile, a sweet dog named Reissi received exciting news. X-rays confirmed she is pregnant and likely close to giving birth. The team counted approximately eight puppies and hopes she can soon head to a foster home where she can safely welcome her babies into the world!
Duke’s Medical Emergency

Not long after, the team faced an urgent situation when Duke suffered a severe choke episode after eating. Veterinarians worked quickly to remove the blockage and provide supportive care but despite their efforts, Duke’s condition continued to deteriorate throughout the day.
After careful monitoring and exhausting all available options, the difficult decision was made to provide Duke with a Last Act of Kindness, ensuring he would not continue to suffer. It was a heartbreaking moment for everyone involved.
Sergeant Muffins Heads to Colorado

Amid the challenges, there was good news to celebrate. Sergeant Muffins officially left the Tennessee shelter and began his journey to Colorado, where he will receive continued care and enjoy a comfortable future with a trusted sanctuary partner known for giving senior horses exceptional care.
Buyout Day Brings Difficult Cases

Buyout day once again revealed the harsh reality of the slaughter pipeline. Many of the horses arriving were elderly, seriously ill, injured, or suffering from advanced medical conditions.
Veterinarians evaluated horse after horse, finding dehydration, infections, joint injuries, severe lameness, and other conditions that significantly impacted quality of life. While 5 horses arrived with promising futures ahead of them, many others required compassionate intervention to prevent further suffering.
A New Chapter for Dr. Gina

The episode closed with exciting news from Dr. Gina! She has been awarded a prestigious three-year veterinary residency focused on equine ambulatory medicine, sports medicine and rehabilitation in Virginia. While she will be leaving the shelter full-time, she plans to continue assisting Horse Plus through consulting and telemedicine whenever possible.
Her dedication, expertise, and compassion have touched countless animals, and while the team will miss seeing her every day, we are excited to watch her continue making a difference in the veterinary field.
We are so incredibly proud to see our vets excel on a national stage and educate the next generation of large-animal veterinarians on the massive importance of equine rescue!
