Welcoming New Arrivals

The morning began with heartbreak. A group of older, malnourished horses arrived. While they seemed fine at first, one severely starved four-year-old collapsed later that day.

Despite every effort, this horse suffered from refeeding syndrome, a dangerous condition where the body cannot handle nutrients after prolonged starvation. The team acted quickly and compassionately, easing the horse’s suffering.
Dr. Lydia Returns: Expertise in Action

With Dr. Lydia back on site, the team could go deeper into veterinary care than ever before. She assisted with small and large animals alike from spay and neuter procedures for cats and dogs to hoof care, heart monitoring and wound treatment for horses and mules.

Her return allowed for advanced diagnostics, like ultrasound confirmations and detailed monitoring for heart murmurs, giving the team confidence that every animal was getting the care they needed.
Moving Shelters & Pasture Prep

Innovation and hard work went hand in hand. A new shelter was moved into the pasture to provide safety and comfort for the horses. The team tackled heavy panels, tricky angles and even relied on tractors and winches to get the job done. Watching the horses explore their new space brought a sense of accomplishment and hope.
Adoptions & Happy Endings

Not all stories were somber. Scarlett, a sweet Spotted Saddle Horse, found her forever home, bringing joy to both her new family and the staff. In a lighter moment, the team held a fun “donkey adoption” drawing, adding smiles to a busy, high-stakes day.
Training & Trust

Horses like Cora, who arrived fearful and unhandled, made remarkable progress with patient training. Staff focused on building trust, showing that human interaction can be safe and even rewarding, preparing these animals for a smoother transition into their new homes.
Storm Prep & Safety First

With tornado warnings in the forecast, the team worked quickly to move animals from barns to open pastures where they would be safest. Safety is always a priority, no matter the chaos of rescue days.
Teamwork Makes the Dream Work

From surgeries and hoof care to shelter building and training, today was a perfect example of teamwork. With Dr. Lydia back, the team could tackle more complex cases and ensure continuity of care for every animal.
The dedication of the Horse Plus Humane Society team proves that compassion, skill and collaboration can change lives—one animal at a time.
