Horse Shelter Heroes – S4E23

It’s been another fast-paced week here at the shelter! Between early morning vet rounds and cross-country flights to mentor other rescues, there is never a dull moment when you’re on a mission to save lives. From the training ring to the airport terminal, here is what’s been happening in our neck of the woods.

Morning Hoof Care: Farrier Day

Monday kicks off with farrier day at Horse Plus Humane Society. Some of the horses need sedation to safely trim their feet and one special case, Harvest, is recovering from a pulled heel that left sensitive tissue exposed.

The team carefully cleans, disinfects, and packs her hoof to prevent infection and promote healing. It’s precise, patient work and by the end, Harvest’s foot is wrapped and protected, ready for recovery.

Meanwhile, Homer, a chronically foundered horse, gets his feet trimmed. Though his condition is lifelong, consistent care can make him comfortable and ready for adoption. Every horse receives individualized attention to ensure comfort and long-term health.

Learning Never Stops: Dr. Nancy’s Big Adventure

While we were busy at the barn, Dr. Nancy headed out for some serious continuing education! She is currently in Idaho for a multi-week course at the Academy of Equine Dentistry. Even after 20 years in practice, she’s dedicated to learning the latest methods for correcting dental pathologies. This training will help our rescues enjoy a much more comfortable, pain-free eating experience for the rest of their lives.

In the Training Ring: Star & Nadia

Our trainer was back in the saddle this week, working with Star, a big, beautiful horse transferred from Outlaw Rescue. Star has a habit of tossing his head, so we focused on gentle pressure and release using a snaffle bit to help him find a relaxed head position.

He’s a well-trained guy with some great “buttons” installed, though he is a bit buddy-sour!

We also saw a major breakthrough with Nadia, a Mustang owner surrender. When Nadia first arrived, she would shut down and shake with fear. After two months of building trust, she is now picking up all four feet and moving beautifully in the round pen.

Her progress was so impressive that she was officially adopted this week! She’ll be heading to her new home very soon to continue her journey.

Mentoring on the Road: Lazy B Equine Rescue

Finally, Tawny and Jason hopped a flight (with a few Airlines delays!) to visit Lazy B Equine Rescue and Sanctuary in Utah. We spent the day mentoring their young team and observing their fantastic education programs.

We were so impressed with their passion that we officially invited them to our upcoming Rescue Boot Camp, where they’ll have a chance to win a $15,000 grant!

Community & Compassion

At the heart of Horse Plus Humane Society is a simple philosophy: patience, care and trust transform lives. Whether it’s a horse finding comfort after injury, a young Mustang learning to trust, or a tiny dog heading to a loving home, every animal is given a chance to thrive.

The team’s dedication extends beyond the shelter, inspiring the wider community to support, learn, and engage with rescue work.
