A New Beginning for Scarlet & Scooby

At Horse Plus Humane Society, every goodbye is a celebration.
Scarlet loaded up for her new home with a little nervous energy and a lot of encouragement. New trailer, new barn, new life. Change can be scary, but it is also the start of something beautiful. With one last check of the trailer and a little patience, Scarlet was on her way.

Not long after, Scooby the dog had his own big moment. After just a few weeks at the shelter, he met his person and it was instant connection. Adoption paperwork signed, tail wagging, and just like that, Scooby headed home.
Stories like these remind us why we do what we do. Rescue works.
Auction Day Hope

Auction day is always a mix of nerves and determination. You never know what you will find or how many lives you can save.
This time, the team rescued 11 equines from shipping to slaughter. While that number may sound small, every single one represents a life redirected toward safety.

Interestingly, horse prices have been fluctuating across the country, sometimes dropping shockingly low. But regardless of market trends, the mission stays the same. If a horse is in danger and we can help, we step in.

This group brought cautious optimism. Many were older. Several needed dental work. A few had injuries requiring X rays and further evaluation.
But overall, this was one of the healthier groups the team has seen in months. That alone felt like a victory.
The Mystery of the Microchips

In a surprising twist, several horses at the auction scanned with microchips. Microchipping is something the shelter prioritizes for adopted animals. It creates a safety net in case of disasters, theft, or horses ending up in the wrong place.

Finding so many microchipped horses at auction was unusual and a reminder of why permanent identification matters. Every scan tells a story. Every number could mean a chance at reunion or accountability.
Intensive Care & Tough Decisions

Back at the shelter, intake began. x-rays, dental checks, wound care, vaccinations, and full veterinary exams. The slower pace of this intake allowed the team to look deeper, notice subtle issues, and create thoughtful treatment plans.

One mare, a former Tennessee Walking Horse show horse, broke hearts. Severe underlying joint and bone changes meant her pain could not be fixed. After careful evaluation and reflection, the team made the compassionate decision to give her a peaceful goodbye.

The last act of kindness is never easy. But sometimes, it is the most compassionate choice we can make. Instead of facing fear and uncertainty, she enjoyed grain, grew sleepy and peacefully slipped away, surrounded by calm and care, handled with dignity and respect every step of the way.
Rescue is not just about saving lives. It is about preventing suffering.
Healing Hands & Fresh Starts

Surgery. Isolation. Dentals. Refeeding plans.
One horse needed proud flesh removed and coordinated farrier care. Another was treated and separated for a respiratory infection. Seniors were placed on targeted dental and nutrition programs to rebuild strength.

Small wins followed. Mud scrubbed clean. Burrs brushed from tangled manes. A skinny gelding relaxing into his first spa day. Fear fading. Personalities emerging.

With warmer Tennessee weather on their side, the team worked efficiently, even juggling unexpected fence repairs and staffing challenges. Rescue life rarely slows down, but moments of teamwork and laughter carried everyone through.
