Quietly Pulling Horses from the Slaughter Pipeline

Behind the scenes, the Horse Plus Humane Society team carried out a covert auction rescue, using trusted volunteers to bid without revealing the organization’s identity. This strategy helps protect future access and saves horses from slipping into the slaughter pipeline.

This time, six horses made it out safely, arriving just ahead of an approaching storm and straight into care.
First Stop: Medical Triage

Once at the shelter, the real work began. Several horses arrived in critical condition, suffering from dehydration, old fractures, heart murmurs, cataracts, infections and severe lameness.
The veterinary team moved quickly, providing pain relief, fluids, diagnostics and hands-on care.

Innovative and hands-on treatments, including intravenous and rectal fluid therapy, were used to help critically dehydrated horses. Ultrasounds and radiographs revealed long standing injuries that told the story of years without proper care.
When Love Means Letting Go

Not every horse could be saved. Two mares were found to have catastrophic injuries that caused constant pain and had no realistic path to recovery.
The team made the compassionate decision to provide them with the last act of kindness, ensuring these horses knew comfort and kindness at the end of their journey.
Recovery, One Horse at a Time

For the remaining horses, individualized care plans were put in place. Quarantine protocols included antibiotics, vaccines, probiotics, deworming, electrolytes and carefully managed nutrition.
Some horses simply needed time, groceries and rest. Others required ongoing monitoring and treatment. Each one received exactly what they needed to move forward.

Matching Hearts Through Adoption

Amid the medical challenges, joy found its way in. Horses like Spirit, Jaxon and Rhett were adopted, heading off to promising new chapters.

Donkeys also found their spotlight, with Cici, Dawn and Maple finally finding homes of their own. Each adoption was thoughtfully matched, considering temperament, health and lifestyle needs.
Why This Work Matters

This episode highlights the full reality of rescue life. It is emotional, exhausting, messy and deeply meaningful. From quiet auction bids to joyful adoption days, every step is guided by compassion and the belief that every horse and donkey deserves dignity, care, and a chance at a better future.
Because rescue is not just about saving lives. It is about changing them.
