From Tawnee: I Saved Another Horse After the Auction

Hello everyone, it’s Tawnee here (founder of HPHS) and I just wanted to tell you all again thank you so much for your support we couldn’t have rescued all these horses without people like you. All 32  horses are safely back at our shelter.  They all have been seen by the veterinarian and have their intake process done. Here is a short video with pictures of each one of the horses rescued. We will be posting updates later about them, but you can see each one this link by clicking here.

I wanted to tell you a short story about a horse we saved at the auction this morning. Last night we were up well past 1 am, the auctions never gets over early and there’s always so much to be done right after the auction. I finally got to sleep but my mind was whirling with auction numbers and horses going through my head. I woke up at 5:30 am kicking myself that I didn’t win the bid on a horse that was a registered Tennessee Walking Showhorse, named Pushers Evil Eye. He was so beautiful. When he came into the ring I started bidding on him but then the auctioneer did not see my last bid and I lost him. I felt certain that if he didn’t get shipped to slaughter, somebody would put stacks and chains on him and use him in the big lick racket. I kept telling myself, you can’t save them all, it’s impossible to find that horse now, just move on and forget him, think about the 31 you saved.

When we pulled up to the auction this morning there was a huge trailer there loading up horses. There were already a large number of horses in the trailer.  I looked at them and saw that beautiful horse I had been thinking about all morning looking out from the middle of that huge trailer and I knew it was my second chance.   I told Jason (my husband) who I had not told about the struggle going on in my mind that morning, that I was going to go buy that horse.  I’m not sure what he thought.  I walked over to the trailer, crawled up on the side, and told the person loading the other horses that I really wanted to buy that horse.

He told me that it wasn’t happening, and continued loading horses. After some convincing, he finally agreed to sell me the horse, but then tried to tell me the one I wanted was a different horse in his trailer.  I kept insisting that it was the first horse I had asked about.  We agreed on a price slightly over what he paid for at the auction, but I knew I had to save this horse.  I am typically against buying horses after the auction, but I knew I had to buy this horse to give my mind peace and save him.
We pulled him off the trailer and I was so thankful that this horse was going to get an amazing chance at life.  He is so beautiful!  He is a double registered Tennessee Walking show horse.

On the way back to the shelter I did a little research and found an old advertisement where someone was selling him.  There are so many horses like him out there.  Most of them fall through the cracks and are never seen again…

This evening along with the 31 other horses we rescued at the auction he is settled in comfortably, enjoying his nice yummy hay.

I can’t thank each and every person enough for your support that enables us to save so many amazing horses.  We couldn’t do it without you, you are each my heroes.  Thank you!!!  ~ Tawnee Preisner, Founder
