Horse Shelter Heroes – S4E43

This week at Horse Plus Humane Society felt like a true turning point. From celebrating a major adoption milestone to preparing for a high-stakes trip to Washington D.C., the energy at the shelter has been electric.
We are moving forward with one goal in mind: changing the world for horses, whether that’s through hands-on care or changing the laws that protect them.

The 60-Day Milestone: Finding Forever Homes

After weeks of navigating complex “dealer license” regulations and state requirements, we have finally hit a massive milestone: the 60-day mark! This achievement means that a beautiful group of horses and donkeys from our buyout program are officially eligible for adoption and ready to find their new families.
Our shelter manager, Angela, has been hard at work updating the adoption wall which currently features 41 amazing animals just waiting for their perfect match!

To celebrate, we are hosting a special adoption event from December 10th through 13th where the adoption fee is simply a brand-new toy for a local child in need.
It is truly the perfect way to bring a new family member home while giving back to our wonderful community!
Fiesta’s Road to Recovery

Our “Olympic jumper,” Fiesta, remains on vet watch, but she is making incredible strides every single day. Following her scary accident, we have been hard at work cleaning and flushing her puncture wounds to ensure they drain and heal properly.
We are currently utilizing advanced blue light therapy to speed up the cellular healing process while applying specialized SSD ointment to keep any potential infections at bay.

In a major win for her morale, Fiesta has officially graduated from the surgery room to an outside stall where the fresh air and sunshine are doing wonders for her spirit as she acclimates to being back outdoors.
The Mystery of Black Beauty

Is he a Friesian? A cross? A Tennessee native? The debate over Black Beauty has been heating up!
To settle it once and for all, we pulled hair samples this week to send off to the Texas A&M University animal genetics lab. While we wait for the results which usually take about three weeks, we’re placing our bets on a Friesian-gated horse cross.
Stay tuned for the big reveal!
Inspiring the Next Generation

Tawnee and the team took a trip to the local high school this week to talk to students about careers in animal welfare. Bringing along Cowboy, Dino and a tiny kitten, we showed these students that following your dreams, even “crazy” ones like starting a horse rescue at age 19, is entirely possible.
We need more veterinarians and humane officers in the workforce and seeing the gears turn in these students’ heads was a highlight of the week!
A Historic Adoption: Dolly Heads Home

We had a major “first” this week! Dolly became the very first horse from our recent buyout program to be officially adopted.
Her new family has a special soft spot for blind and handicapped animals and seeing this sweet girl load up to start her new life was the perfect reminder of why the buyout program is so vital.
Heading to the Capital: Fighting for Change
“We should always do everything we can to do as much good as we can, but sometimes we can’t do as much good as we should when the laws aren’t there to be the backbone of protection.”
-Tawnee Preisner

The week wrapped up with Tawnee and Jason preparing for a massive mission: flying to Washington D.C. to meet with national decision-makers.
After 20 years on the front lines, Tawnee is taking her firsthand experience to the halls of government to advocate for stronger animal protection laws.
Barn Cat Bonus & Holiday Cheer

The “small animal” department was busy too! TC and Moo, two of our favorite barn cats, were officially “adopted” by staff members Kory and Caitlyn to help with mousing duties at home.

Plus, thanks to a donation from Tractor Supply, we have a beautiful real Christmas tree decorating the office!
Every adoption, every donation and every voice raised for these animals helps us move closer to a world where no horse has to suffer. Because for this team, rescue isn’t just about saving lives today… it’s about changing the future for all horses.
Thank you for being part of this journey with us!
