Hundreds and thousands of horses are exported out of the United States for slaughter. On an almost daily basis the USDA reports that horses are exported into Mexico for the purpose of slaughter. We post these reports on our Facebook page to help expose what is happening to our American horses: Thoroughbreds, Quarter Horses, Mustangs, Tennessee Walking Horses, Standardbreds… the list goes on. Horses in America are bred and raised as pleasure horses and performance horses, but no horses are raised for the purpose of slaughter. Horses pulled covered wagons, were beside us in battle, and are the back bone of our history. Despite everything horses have done to make The United States what it is today, these beautiful horses are exported out of their country into another country to be brutally killed in a slaughterhouse. In fact, horse are the most “Livestock” exported out of the United States. Current year to date as of September 15th, 20,188 horses were exported for slaughter and 4,057 cattle were exported for slaughter. As you can see, horses are the main livestock exported for the purpose of slaughter outside of the United States.

With the number of horses being exported on a nearly daily basis for “breeding” we begin to get suspicious on the number of horses being exported and what their true purpose is. Researching the USDA’s website horse export we found lot of information on exporting horses for slaughter out of the United States. One thing we found out is that “Slaughter horses to Mexico must be free of ticks. Horses with ticks will be rejected at the border.” We thought that was interesting! A tick could save a horse from being exported for slaughter!

We found on the USDA’s website that there are 2 main forms that must be filled out to export horses into Mexico for the purpose of Slaughter. The Health Certificate for Slaughter Horses and a Horse Slaughter Export Affidavit.

There is a temporary horse expert form that is much shorter and less lengthy than the two other forms required for horse export. We believe that a large majority of the horses being exported into Mexico not under the slaughter category are ultimately ending up in slaughterhouses in Mexico. Once a horse crosses the border under a temporary export, who is doing follow-up to make sure the horse comes back? We believe that many small-time horse trader / kill buyers are exporting horses into Mexico under this pretense. Now obviously the big-time kill buyers can’t get away with this as they bring semi load after semi load to the border, but for the small-time killer buyers there’s a nice little loophole to make it easy for them. “The horse is being transported to my cousin’s ranch temporarily” etc.

Some people say that horse slaughter doesn’t happen and we’re just a bunch of liars. We don’t know how we could be more plain with the facts, posting daily slaughter export reports from the USDA, posting slaughter export forms right off of the USDA’s website. The fact is every week, hundreds of horses are being exported into Mexico to be brutally killed. What these horses go through is unbelievably horrific.

If you have the stomach to handle it, there’s a documentary called the Slaughterhouse on FILMS FOR ACTION. The film crew goes into a a slaughterhouse in Mexico and documents what happens to horses. It is unbelievable what happens to them and will put a fire in the heart of the viewer to do what they can to start making a difference and saving horses from this horrible fate. *Warning Graphic!* The horse section starts at 17:16 of the video: https://www.filmsforaction.org/watch/slaughterhouse-what-the-meat-industry-hides-2017/ You can also read a report about the slaughterhouse investigation when they where filming at this link: http://traslosmuros.com/en/slaughterhouses-investigation-mexico.php
What is happening to our American horses by the hundreds is absolutely horrendous. But there is hope, the Safeguard American Food Exports (SAFE) Act would prohibit selling or transporting equines for the purpose of slaughter for human consumption. Because horses in the United States are not being bred or raised for slaughter, they are given a host of medications that make them unsafe for human consumption such as, phenylbutazone, acepromazine, xylazine, hyaluronic acid, nitrofurazone, tolazoline, ponazuril to list only a few for you. If the Safe Act Ever passes, it would put a stop to our horses being exported in to Mexico to be brutally killed. Learn more about the SAFE Act bill: https://bit.ly/2ZHITZF
USDA export reports show that horses are the primary livestock exported into Mexico. We as United States citizens do not want our horses to be exported into Mexico to be brutally killed. It is time to put a stop to this, we as horse lovers can come together and end the export of our American Horses. Until the SAFE Act passes hundreds and thousands of horses are being exported to a brutal and cruel death in a Mexican slaughterhouse. With your help we can save as many horses from that horrible fate as we can. We will be going to an auction at the end of this month to rescue horses before the kill buyers purchase them for slaughter. We rescue horses regardless of their condition, even if they need the Last Act of Kindness. After they are rescued out of the slaughter pipeline they are individually evaluated by our veterinarian and intake team to determine what is the best plan for each horse: adoption, rehab, training, or the Last Act of Kindness. Please be a horse rescue hero and support our mission of saving horses by making a donation. Help us as we try to keep horses from being exported into Mexico for slaughter. Donate Now!
