Double the Donkeys, Double the Joy

The episode kicks off with a special family visit. Laura and her family arrive to meet two donkeys, Possum and young Arthur. Both came from auction backgrounds with unknown histories, but plenty of personality.

Arthur is curious and eager for attention, while Possum is a bit more spunky. After spending time with both and learning about their care, health checks, and quirks, the decision is easy. The family adopts both donkeys, giving them companionship and a safe future alongside their draft horse at home.
Moments like these are what it is all about. By the end of the visit, adoption numbers are climbing and two more lives are forever changed.
Doing What Is Best for Every Horse

Next, the focus turns to medical care. Doc and the team perform Coggins tests, pregnancy checks and lameness evaluations. Not every update is easy. Some mares are found open after likely reabsorbing pregnancies, and one horse shows signs of founder and serious discomfort.

Despite trying treatment and supportive care, one horse’s quality of life continues to decline. With heavy hearts, the team makes the kindest decision possible. These moments are never taken lightly, and they reflect Horse Plus’s commitment to dignity, comfort and compassion, even when the choice is painful.

When Everyone Pitches In

A semi load of alfalfa brings unexpected chaos when a trailer gets stuck. The solution is simple but exhausting. Unload it all by hand in hot, humid weather.

Staff, volunteers, and even Caleb from behind the camera grab pitchforks and get to work. What was estimated as a small job turns into moving around 250 bales of hay. It is hard work, lots of laughs, and a true team effort that keeps the shelter running.

A Perfect Match

One of the most heartwarming moments comes when Caitlin, Horse Plus’s grant manager, evaluates Maya, a beautiful horse that reminds her of one she loved growing up.
Maya still has the spark of her barrel racing days, eager and forward, but she settles beautifully on a trail ride. The connection is instant. By the end of the ride, the answer is clear. Maya is going home. Sometimes the right horse really does find you.
Standing Up for Horses Everywhere

The episode closes with a powerful message beyond the shelter gates. Team members travel to Shelbyville, Tennessee, to stand against the Big Lick, a practice tied to painful training methods in Tennessee Walking Horses.

They join advocates from across the country, speak with local media, and peacefully protest to raise awareness. From heavy stacks and sore chains to children riding without helmets, the team speaks for the horses who cannot speak for themselves.

This advocacy is not always comfortable, but it is necessary. Change begins when people show up, speak out, and refuse to look away.
