Medical Updates & Moving Days

The week kicked off with a beehive of activity in the quarantine barn. Our team has been busy monitoring weights and temperatures to ensure everyone is healthy before joining the main herd.

Dr. Nancy has also been busy training the staff on our fickle X-ray machine, which is crucial for diagnosing the hidden pain many of these animals carry.

One of our biggest transformations is Tori. If you remember how terrified she was during intake, you wouldn’t recognize her now. After a month of decompression and kindness, she has become a perfect angel.

On a tougher note, we took in four surrendered horses this week. Sadly, our exams revealed that three of them had severe, chronic issues like bone erosion and degraded joints that weren’t compatible with a high quality of life.
While these decisions are the hardest we ever make, we are grateful we could provide them with a final act of kindness.
Mustang Makeovers

Handling unhandled Mustangs is a high-stakes job that requires a lot of patience and some creative thinking. To keep both the humans and the horses safe, we decided to sedate five Mustangs and Millie the donkey for their much-needed hoof trims.
Working at awkward angles while a horse is “napping” isn’t easy, but it’s the best way to get the job done without extreme stress.

Freya, our resident “Olympic jumper” who previously tried to clear a six-foot fence, finally got her hooves in order. Since the trims, the team has been working on gentling the group with grain and grooming.
We want them to learn that a human hand doesn’t always mean a scary experience.
Rescue Romance

We have a very special “Rescue Romance” announcement. Our trainer Kory and staff member Caitlin are engaged! They actually met right here at the shelter when Caitlin came to adopt a horse named Ruger back in November.
To make the celebration even sweeter, they are adopting Sammy the pony for Caitlin’s daughter. He has officially been renamed “Chipmunk” and is headed off to start his new life as a beloved family member.
Property Progress & Gratitude

If you hear rumbling in the background of our videos, that’s just the sound of progress. We’ve had excavators on-site leveling roadways, clearing out the manure pile and fixing drainage issues to keep the mud at bay.

We also want to give a massive thank you to the anonymous supporter who sent flowers addressed to “Dr. Nancy Hero.” Your kindness keeps our spirits high during these long, emotional days!
How You Can Help

We are currently burning through rolls of four-inch Elasticon for Ginger’s physical therapy. She is making wonderful progress, but keeping her medical boots on is a daily battle of wills!
If you’d like to help us out, we would love to have a nice box in reserve for days like this.

Every horse that walks through our gates has a story, and it’s your support that allows us to write a better ending for them. Whether it’s providing life-saving medical care, training a nervous Mustang, or finding a child their first pony, we can’t do this alone.
Thank you for being a hero for the horses. Together, we are making the world a kinder place, one hoofbeat at a time!
