Evaluating Horses Before the Rescue Begins

The day started with trail rides back at the shelter. These rides are more than exercise. They help the team understand a horse’s temperament and suitability for future adopters, especially those looking for safe trail partners.
Calm minds and steady feet can make all the difference when placing horses into loving homes.
A Smaller Crew at a Tough Auction

Only four team members headed to this covert auction, while others stayed behind preparing for upcoming rescues. With limited space and just one trailer, every decision had to be thoughtful.

The plan was to rescue about ten horses, but when two severely emaciated minis appeared, hearts overruled numbers.

Thirteen horses were loaded, carefully grouped to ensure a safe and comfortable ride home.
Immediate Care for Horses in Crisis

Several horses arrived in critical condition. Pain medications were given right away to ease suffering, including treatment for suspected ringbone, arthritis, founder and other painful conditions. Even before full exams could happen, comfort came first.
When a Mare Goes Wild

Rescue days are unpredictable and this one delivered a tense moment when one mare suddenly panicked during intake.
Overstimulated, frightened and overwhelmed, she reacted explosively, reminding everyone just how quickly fear can turn dangerous.

The team moved fast, prioritizing safety for both the horse and the people around her. Calm voices, space and experience brought the situation back under control.
No one was hurt and the mare was given the time she needed to decompress. It was a powerful reminder that auction horses are not “bad,” they are scared.
Intake Exams Reveal Hard Truths

Once back at the shelter, veterinary evaluations revealed what auctions often hide. Ringbone, arthritis, eye injuries, hoof neglect, infections and reproductive issues surfaced quickly.
Some horses could be treated and given time to heal. Others were already living in constant pain.
When Rescue Means a Final Act of Kindness

Not every story had a happy ending. One young colt arrived with severe internal issues that could not be fixed.
After diagnostics confirmed a painful and dangerous condition, the team made the hardest call of any rescue faces. The final act of kindness was chosen to prevent suffering.
These moments are heartbreaking, but they are rooted in love, not loss.
Small Wins & New Beginnings

Alongside the heartbreak were hopeful moments. A young filly learned to lead for the first time. Stallions were safely castrated to give them calmer futures. Horses were vaccinated, microchipped and finally given the attention they had long been denied.
For many, this was the first step toward a new life.
Looking Beyond One Auction

The episode closes with an exciting look ahead. Horse Plus Humane Society announces a mentorship program supporting four other rescue organizations through training, guidance, and a $15,000 grant. The goal is simple and ambitious: stronger rescues mean more horses saved.
Sharing knowledge is how impact grows!
Why This Work Matters

This auction rescue reminds us that saving horses is not just about pulling them from danger. It is about long hours, hard decisions, and showing up even when the outcome is uncertain.
Thirteen horses got a second chance because a team chose compassion, preparation and perseverance.
And that is what shelter heroes look like!
