When I was 19 years old I attended my first auction with the purpose of buying a horse. Growing up next to a kill buyer and attending livestock auctions since I was little I really didn’t think about what went on after the auction. I knew my neighbor constantly had horses coming and going and that the horses went to slaughter but it really didn’t sink in until I went to an auction that was selling horses for slaughter. I rescued a beautiful four-year-old registered Quarter Horse mare who had never been handled.

I was delighted with this beautiful young mare who was so eager to learn and before long we were going on trail rides together. She was an awesome horse. That’s when it really hit me: she would have gone to slaughter if I had not saved her. I then thought about the hundreds and thousands of other horses just like her, so full of potential, but being sold for slaughter instead. That’s when I realized I had to do something. I had to start rescuing horses from that horrible fate and giving them a chance at the life they deserved. Fast forward, nearly two decades later, I have rescued over six thousand horses, operate a national horse welfare organization, adopting hundreds of horses out each year into amazing homes, and we have our own reality TV Show, Horse Rescue Heroes. I have traveled throughout the United States helping horses and mentoring other organizations so they can help rescue more horses, but my true passion is where this organization’s roots are. Saving horses at auction, pulling them out of the slaughter pipeline and giving them a chance at life.

Over the last 16 years, I have attended so many auctions that I can’t remember how many, but many of the horses I have met at those auctions will stay with me for the rest of my life. I have seen so many horses in desperate situations and have helped as many as I possibly could. This Tuesday we will be attending another auction to save more horses. I don’t know what we will face at that auction but I know that we will see horses that desperately need our help. I know that kill buyers will be lining the inside of the auction ring sizing up the horses, figuring out how much they weigh, and how much profit they can make off of selling them to the slaughterhouse.

Saving horses from the auction is a lot of heartbreaking work, but we will keep on fighting for every horse we can, saving them and giving them a new chance at life. Please help be a part of this auction rescue and help us save as many horses as we can.
