Surgery. Breakthroughs. No Slow Mornings.
The day didn’t ease in. It launched.
Ginger went straight into surgery to release her contracted tendons. Precision. Sterile prep. Dr. Nancy leading the charge. If all goes as planned, this brave mare will finally stand and walk flat-footed, something she’s likely never known.
Cherish hit a milestone of her own. From stall-bound uncertainty to stepping boldly into the round pen, she moved with a spark we hadn’t seen before. Confidence unlocked. Another life expanding beyond four walls!
Even our permanent barn crew, yes, including Chatty and the self-appointed “barn cat mafia” got their wellness checks. In rescue, details matter. Every life matters.
And then we loaded up for Cookeville.
The Auction That Changed Everything
When we arrived, something felt different. The crowd was thin. The numbers were low. The economy is tight, donations are tighter and every bid carries weight. We knew the risk.
And then the bidding started.
One horse. Then another. Then another. No backup buyers stepping in. No last-minute saves from elsewhere. So we made a decision.
For the first time in 20 years of rescue, we cleared the ring. Every single horse who sold that night came home with us.
Twenty-one lives. Horses. Donkeys. A tiny mini mule with eyes too big for her fragile frame. Not one left behind. Not one loaded for slaughter.
Twenty-one heartbeats that would have disappeared into the pipeline, now safe!
The Reality Behind the Win
Victory in rescue is rarely clean.
Some of the horses arrived with injuries hidden beneath dull coats and quiet eyes. Dislocated shoulders. Advanced DSLD. Chronic lameness masked by adrenaline and fear.
Several spiked fevers within hours, classic auction flu setting in. Respiratory distress. Heads low. Fighting.
And one… one was suffering beyond recovery.
A catastrophic shoulder injury. Hooves left to twist and crack under neglect. Pain written across every movement. The only gift we could give was mercy. We stayed with him. We made it gentle. We made it fast.
This is the part people don’t see. But it’s why we do it.
Because no animal deserves to suffer alone.
The New 21: Home at Last
Three hours back in the rain. Trailer lights cutting through darkness. Twenty-one survivors behind us. By the time we unloaded, the work had already begun.
Dr. Nancy moved from stall to stall with thermal microchip scanner in hand, checking temperatures instantly, minimizing stress. X-rays lined up. Treatment plans forming in real time. No delays.
Among the group: a blind Standardbred, likely a former Amish harness horse who gave years of work without complaint. Now he’ll get something different, rest, safety, dignity.
And the donkey we’ve watched since January? She’s finally here. Finally ours to protect.
They are no longer lot numbers. They are no longer inventory. They are finally safe.
Now the Real Work Begins
Clearing that ring was a leap of faith.
Rehab isn’t cheap. Feed. Medical care. Farrier work. Diagnostics. Specialized surgeries. Long-term recovery plans. The donkey pen alone will be buzzing.
But this is what impact looks like. Impact requires action.
Fast decisions. Bold action. No animal left standing in the ring.
