Nita Steps Up

Training a young horse takes a whole lot of patience, love, and a very steady seat. This week, Cody took sweet Nita out under the saddle for only her third time ever. Because her previous sessions were strictly limited to the safety of the round pen, moving out into the open pasture was a massive milestone!

While Nita was a little unsure about moving her feet at first, she proved to be an incredibly brave student. We even set up some barrels to practice turning and intermediate rider Payton hopped on to help build her confidence. She still has some learning to do but this willing girl is well on her way to becoming an amazing riding partner!
Winky Gets a Second Chance

One of the week’s most delicate medical cases involved a tiny kitten suffering from a severely damaged eye. After examination, the veterinary team determined the eye was both blind and painful, leaving surgical removal as the best option. Veterinary student Alex successfully performed the procedure under Dr. Lydia’s guidance, giving the kitten a chance at a comfortable and happy future!

With her surgery complete, the team affectionately named her “Winky” and looks forward to finding her a loving home once she fully recovers.
A Dolphin Specialist for a Mini Horse? Meet Cowboy!

When our beloved 24-year-old miniature horse resident, Cowboy, developed a heart murmur back in February, we knew we needed to call in the best. Enter Dr. Marina, a boarded zoological radiologist famous for her work with marine mammals, dolphins, and performing the world’s first successful beluga whale surgery!
Dr. Marina brought her incredible expertise to the shelter to perform an echocardiogram on Cowboy. Using a specialized ultrasound system and tons of gel, the team captured video loops of Cowboy’s mitral and tricuspid valves.

Cowboy was a perfect gentleman for his scan even if he kept drifting away like a dolphin in the water whenever the team pushed on him! We are sending the clips to veterinary cardiologists to determine if he needs any medical interventions. For now, he is resting comfortably in his recovery stall.
For Cowboy, this evaluation provides important information that will help guide his long-term care.
Sego Lily Finds Her Forever Home!

We are throwing a massive celebration for Sego Lily! This gorgeous pony with striking blue eyes has officially been adopted by Megan. Sego Lily has been with us for a long time, transitioning from a completely wild, shaking horse to a laid-back, chilled companion who will pass any trail or obstacle test.
Megan fell in love with Sego Lily’s short stature and sweet disposition, realizing she’d be the perfect future mount for her growing son and a great companion for her other horses and goats. While she was a little shy around her new family at first, we know that getting out of the shelter and into a steady herd is exactly what she needs to thrive.
We will miss you, Sego Lily!
Mahogany’s Brave Fight

One of the most emotional moments of the week involved Mahogany, a Mustang mare who arrived through the buyout program with a chronic wound that had refused to heal.
After months of treatment, cultures, diagnostics, and careful monitoring, advanced imaging revealed a far more serious problem than originally suspected. The team discovered extensive damage involving her rib and chest cavity along with a severe infection that could not be safely repaired.

Despite everyone’s hopes, the condition was beyond what could be treated. After careful discussion and evaluation, the difficult decision was made to provide Mahogany with the Last Act of Kindness. Following her passing, further examination confirmed the severity of the damage and reinforced that the compassionate decision had been the right one.
While heartbreaking, Mahogany was surrounded by people who cared deeply about her and fought tirelessly to find every possible solution.
