Returns, Replacements & Real-Life Rescue Work
Two previously adopted horses were returned after their young owners lost interest. The team welcomed them back and prepared to help them find new homes.
Around the shelter, horses in quarantine showed great progress, and repair projects continued despite incoming storms.
Auction Week… Without Key Staff
Two team members, Jessie and Sarah, were stranded states away due to extreme weather. With auction week looming and key responsibilities uncovered including feed orders, transporting horses and intake prep. The remaining team had to scramble, divide duties and push forward.
And push forward they did.
On the Road to Save Lives
Supporters made it possible to rescue 19 horses at the auction, including a severely injured mustang and several horses who had passed through multiple auctions. Late into the night, the crew medicated, wrapped, and comforted the most critical horses.
A Rain-Soaked Intake Day
Intake happened in nonstop rain. Many horses arrived skinny, elderly, stressed, or injured, including a mare showing signs of Big Lick abuse and others with chronic issues. Each received gentle handling, calming supplements, and evaluation.
When Rescue Means Letting Go
Vet exams revealed devastating, untreatable injuries in several horses. The team made the compassionate choice to provide the Last Act of Kindness, ending suffering that had gone on far too long.
As the team explained, rescuers aren’t the ones causing the suffering, they’re the ones refusing to look away and choosing mercy over misery.
Moments of Hope
Lily, Horse #300 of the year, completed her intake beautifully. Several horses showed healthier X-rays than expected and the vet surprised the whole team with pizza after a long day.
By sunset, all 19 rescued horses were fed, sheltered, and safe. Exhausted but grateful, the team reflected on a day that proved exactly why Horse Plus Humane Society exists.
Why This Work Matters
Every rescue is unpredictable. Some days end in triumph, others in tears but all end in compassion.
