A Month of Second Chances
This past month brought a wave of successful adoptions and transfers, each one a reminder of why this work matters.
Freckles found his forever family, sealing the moment with smiles and celebration. Around the shelter, every adoption is more than just paperwork, it’s a life rewritten.
Moments like that make every struggle worth it.
Volunteers Bring the Heart
Volunteer day brought energy, laughter and a lot of teamwork. From painting and cleaning to grooming horses and walking dogs, the extra hands made a big difference.
Of course, it wouldn’t be a full day without a few surprises. Between hornets, ants, and stubborn wasps, the crew found themselves battling more than just chores. Still, spirits stayed high and the animals got plenty of love and attention.
Healing the Hurt
Not every story is easy. Many of the horses rescued from auction carry painful pasts, both physically and emotionally.
Goldie, once fearful of people, is slowly learning to trust again. Others, like older working horses, show signs of years of strain, scars from ill-fitting harnesses, worn joints, and untreated injuries.
Through exams and x-rays, the team works to understand their pain and give them a chance at comfort. Each scan tells a story these horses couldn’t share before.
When Rescue Gets Risky
Working with rescued horses comes with very real danger. During a routine x-ray, one horse suddenly kicked without warning, sending Tawnee several feet back. The impact left a large, painful bruise across the leg, but thankfully, nothing was broken.
Moments like this are a powerful reminder of the risks involved in rescue. Many of these horses arrive with unknown histories and untreated pain, even the gentlest among them can react instantly when something hurts.
There was no anger toward the horse, only understanding. Pain, not malice, caused the reaction.
Even so, the work didn’t stop.
The team pushed forward, continuing evaluations, documenting each horse’s condition, and making informed decisions about their care and future. Eventually, though, recovery couldn’t be ignored.
Slowing down became necessary as we acknowledge something rescuers often struggle with: we can’t help others if we don’t take care of ourselves, too.
Because in rescue, resilience isn’t just about getting back up… it’s about knowing when to rest so you can keep going.
Why Rescue Matters
Every adoption, every cleaned stall, every x-ray, and even every setback is part of a bigger mission.
Rescue isn’t just about saving horses. It’s about understanding them, even when they can’t explain their pain. It’s about giving them dignity, safety and a chance at something better.
And sometimes, it’s about getting back up after being knocked down, literally, and continuing the work anyway.
Because for these horses, there’s no other option.
