Mixed emotions are brutal. Tonight our hearts are both excited and sad, terrified and excited, hopeful and fearful. Tomorrow, Tuesday, is the auction, and we have not yet met our goal for fundraising. Will we make our goal? Will we have to turn a blind eye to needy horses that we have room at our shelter for because enough funds were not raised? Will we be able to save 20 horses?
We are extremely excited and thankful for the donations that have been given towards the auction rescue, but we are sad that tomorrow about 100 horses will be auctioned off over a couple of hours, some having less than a minute in front of the crowd. These horses are given just 1 minute to try to win a sympathetic bid, just 1 minute to put on their flashiest prance, their best behavior, hoping to hear the auctioneer start calling out a number higher than the kill buyers are paying. The auctioneer never stops until he slams his hammer down, announcing “Sold.” Then their future is sealed. Who won the bid? Will they be crammed in a huge trailer with 30 other horses and get shipped to a feedlot and then on to a slaughterhouse, or will they be transported to our shelter because we won the bid?
At the auction tomorrow 100 horses will have, for the most part, two possible futures: be rescued or shipped to slaughter. There are precious few private families that attend this auction looking for a new addition to their family. We are the horses best chance to survive their auction ordeal, but we can’t do that without your help.
With your help we can give horses hope. With your help we will rescue as many horses as we can, outbidding the kill buyers, transporting them to our shelter, giving them love, compassion, and the best possible chance at forever leaving their mixed emotions behind and finding their bright forever future.
