Horse Shelter Heroes – S3E29

From early morning ferry arrivals to first rides and farrier finishes, this episode of Horse Shelter Heroes captures a full, unforgettable day at Horse Plus Humane Society. It is one of those days where progress looks messy, noisy, emotional and incredibly rewarding!

Farrier Day: Where Comfort Begins

The day kicked off with the farrier tackling a long list of horses and donkeys, each with their own needs and personalities. Sequoia stood calmly without sedation, proving just how far trust and patience can go.

Libby, a more anxious mare with limited handling, needed a little extra help to get comfortable and she handled her trim like a champ once settled.

Several donkeys, including Rudy and Leonardo, reminded everyone that donkey hooves are a whole different ballgame. Strong soles, retained hoof wall and big attitudes meant extra time, sedation and teamwork!

Rudy especially tested limits, but persistence paid off, and by the end, all four hooves were done safely.

In total, 11 horses and donkeys received much needed hoof care, setting them up for healthier movement and less pain moving forward.

Learning in Real Time: A Homeschool Field Trip

A group of homeschool students arrived to see what rescue really looks like. They learned about safety around untrained and abused horses, watched farrier work up close and got an honest look at medical care.

One powerful moment came during Halo’s treatment. Halo has a ruptured tooth abscess that created an opening from her mouth to her face.

The kids watched as the team carefully cleaned the wound, explained the healing process and answered tough questions with compassion and transparency. It was hands-on education at its best!

The students also pitched in, helping with cleaning and chores, proving that even small hands can make a big difference.

Training Through Trust, Not Force

Training sessions shared how behavior often comes from fear, confusion, or pain. Rudy, who had shown aggressive behavior in the past, worked through handling exercises focused on boundaries, calmness and confidence.

The goal was simple but powerful: teach him that he does not need to fight to be safe.

Meet the Sweethearts: Judge and Apache

Not every moment was intense. Judge, a gentle older gelding, stole hearts instantly. Calm, kind and perfect for kids, he showed exactly why senior horses still have so much love to give. Apache, equally sweet and striking, made choosing between the two nearly impossible for a visiting family.

Moments like these show the end goal of rescue: safe, sound horses finding the right humans to love them!

First Ride Success with Athos

The day wrapped up with a big milestone! Athos worked through groundwork, saddling and finally his first ride. There were cautious steps, a few tense moments and a whole lot of encouragement.

In the end, Athos stayed calm, tried his best and finished on a positive note.

First rides are never about perfection. They are about trust, confidence and setting the foundation for everything that comes next. Athos nailed it.

Why This Work Matters

This episode shows the heart of Horse Plus Humane Society. It is not just a rescue. It is rehabilitation, education, patience and showing up for animals on their hardest days.

From farrier care to field trips, from medical treatment to first rides, every moment adds up to a future where these horses are healthier, safer and one step closer to home!

And that is what Horse Shelter Heroes is all about.
