A Season of Successful Adoptions

The absolute best part of this job is watching our residents drive out the front gates with their new families, and lately, we have been on a serious winning streak!

The adoptions kicked off with Vivica, who went home with an experienced handler ready to spoil her rotten, followed closely by Nana, who is headed to a massive open pasture to help a newly retired owner fulfill her lifelong dream of owning a horse.

Then there was Yzy, who practically chose her own owner by pawing at her stall door until Miss April fell head over heels and called her husband to come get her. Even our own staff member, Amber, officially rang the adoption bell after her son fell instantly in love with Oakley, making him a permanent part of their family.

To top it all off, we welcomed a wonderful therapeutic riding program from Alabama that fell in love with Naida for her incredibly chill temperament and Dina for her perfect, kid-friendly size.

Congratulations to all of these amazing new families!

A Bitter Buyout Day

Buyout days are easily the heaviest part of our mission. This week, Dr. Lydia was joined by our stellar senior vet student, Dr. Alex, for her final week, alongside Dr. Marina, a world-class zoological radiologist famous for her work with marine mammals and beluga whales.

Thanks to our amazing donors, our brand-new, climate-controlled intake facility was fully operational. Being able to bring these stressed, exhausted horses straight off a slaughter truck and into a cold, shady room for decompression was an absolute game-changer for their physical and emotional well-being.

Unfortunately, the cases we encountered were incredibly severe. For the veterinary team, these cases serve as painful reminders of the suffering many horses endure before entering the slaughter pipeline.

While emotionally exhausting, providing relief from pain remains one of the most important aspects of the shelter’s mission.

Blackberry Heads to Texas

There was good news for Blackberry, the blind Standardbred mare who stole many hearts during her time at the shelter. She was adopted by Hooker Ranch Equine Refuge in Texas, where she will serve as an ambassador for horses with special needs. Her new family hopes to show others that blind horses can still live happy, fulfilling lives and become wonderful companions.

Watching Blackberry confidently head to her new home was a beautiful reminder that every horse deserves a chance!

A Dr. Lydia Double Adoption!

To end the week on the brightest possible note, our very own Dr. Lydia showed up on her day off with her family for a personal adoption appointment! Her 15-year-old daughter, Eden, was looking for a riding mount and fell hard for Pistola Sparks, a lazy, sweet, five-year-old quarter horse who proved to be an absolute angel around Lydia’s five-year-old son, Silas.

But the magic didn’t stop there. While they were at the barn, our gentler Cody suggested they look at Old Cassie Tucker, a beautiful black Tennessee Walking Horse mare. She turned out to be the perfect fit for Eden’s best friend, Coral.

Realizing that Pistola Sparks and Cassie Tucker were already bonded, Dr. Lydia made the spectacular decision to adopt both and bring them home to her farm!

Moving Forward Together

From the devastating lows of the slaughter pipeline to the pure joy of watching horses run in open pastures, your support keeps this wheel turning. It costs roughly $1,000 to rescue and provide initial intake care for a horse off the trucks and we are gearing up for another massive buyout next week where we expect up to 30 horses in critical condition.

If you want to help us continue to say “yes” to these animals and support our hardworking team, please make a donation today and don’t forget to subscribe so you never miss an update from the front lines of rescue!

Every moment at Horse Plus Humane Society is made possible by supporters who believe every horse deserves compassion and care. Thank you for helping us rescue, rehabilitate, and protect horses in need.

Whether they find a forever home, receive life-saving treatment, or simply experience kindness for the first time in years, your support makes all the difference!
