Why should you help rescue a horse from the slaughter pipeline? Actress and model Christian Payton recently posted a story that we want to share with you. She writes
“A little over a year ago I went to my first slaughter auction for horses. Not all the horses at the sale are bought and shipped to slaughter, a handful are bought by the few (very few) that came to the auction to add a horse to their family, however, some are even so emaciated, beyond even being able to withstand the trip to Mexico or Canada for slaughter. Horse Plus Humane Society rescues as many horses as they can, with the donated funds they have for that month. They don’t care if they can or can’t make the trip. It would be amazing if none had to make the trip and they could afford to buy all the horses that families don’t want. It’s just heartbreaking to watch a horse you know in your heart would be amazing, being bought by one of the smirking slaughter buyers. This guy was bought by one of the slaughter buyers, he was in their pen and about to be loaded on one of their slaughter cattle trailers for the long trip to Mexico.

“As I passed the pen, he neighed. I turned and found him reaching his head around the other horses in the crowded pen, as if he was attempting to reach out to me. I went to him and he placed his nose as close to the wire paneled wall as he could. His eyes were soft, yet they looked sad as if he was begging, as if he knew what his fate was and just needed someone to save him. I went to the slaughter buyer that was standing in the door of the barn waiting to load his trailer. After what seemed like an eternity of negotiations (him wanting more money than I had) I bought this guy and walked him out of that pen.

Every day as I drive up my driveway he meets me at my car window, lowers his head as if to say thank you. I smile, kiss his nose and look in his soft but happy, full of life eyes and say ‘No thank you for showing me what love and determination can accomplish.’” ~ Payton Christian
Valentino has been in several modeling shoots with Payton now. His life would have ended last February, just a number on the USDA slaughter statistics for exported slaughter horses if we had not been at the auction that night, and if Payton had not saved him. Valentino transformed from a throw-away horse to picture perfect model. It’s just amazing.

Tuesday the 14th we will be going to the same auction Payton saved Valentino at. Our goal is to save a lot of horses this month, with your help, we can make more amazing transformations and more amazing stories just like Valentino’s. He now knows happiness, love, and compassion, help us give that to other horses at the auction.

Please make a donation right now, we currently have enough funds to rescue and care for 3 horses. Tawnee’s goal this month is to raise enough funds to rescue and care for 50 horses, but we cannot do it without you.
