Horse Shelter Heroes – S4E39

This week at Horse Plus Humane Society was an absolute rollercoaster! Between prepping for a much-needed team getaway and handling intense rescue calls, our staff has been working double-time to ensure every animal, from tiny puppies to majestic stallions, is safe and loved.
We’ve had tearful goodbyes, exciting new beginnings and some tough reality checks that remind us why this work is so important.

Much-Needed R&R and New Leadership

After months of non-stop auction drama and high-stress rescues, the core team is heading off on a gifted vacation to Aruba! Compassion fatigue is real and this break couldn’t come at a better time.
While Tawnee, Jason, Keith and Angela are away, we have full confidence in our amazing “on-the-ground” crew.

Kory is stepping up to handle everything outside, Caitlyn and Christy are managing the office, Kimberly is leading medical care and Dawn is looking after our small animals.
Go team!
A Dream Come True for Jilly

One of the absolute highlights of the week was watching Jilly the Mustang find her forever human!
A 13-year-old girl named Ember visited the shelter looking for a partner to train for trick riding. It was a perfect match. Seeing Jilly’s photo move from the “Looking for Love” wall to “Found Love” is exactly why we do what we do.
We can’t wait to see Jilly performing in the arena one day!
Clearing Out Quarantine

It was an incredibly busy day for vaccines and boosters as we moved several of our resilient residents out of quarantine and down to the main pastures.
Fiesta, the brave little filly who has already overcome so much with her hernia, is looking great though we are keeping her up top just a bit longer to kick a slight fever.

Meanwhile, Patch, our stunning Ovaro/Tobiano mix, sailed through his boosters and is officially ready to begin his next chapter.

We also welcomed Lila, a sweet senior mule whose age could be anywhere from thirty to fifty years old. She completed her intake with grace, reminding us all that these old souls have so much wisdom and love left to share.
The Hardest Kind of Kindness

Rescue isn’t always about happy endings… sometimes it’s about providing a peaceful exit. We were called to a dangerous situation involving a dog with a severe history of attacking people.
In our area, law enforcement often advises owners to simply shoot aggressive dogs, but we stepped in to ensure a humane, sedated end. It’s a heavy burden, but saving an animal from a life of fear and confinement or a violent death is the last act of mercy we can offer.
A Stunning Makeover for Black Beauty

Have you seen Black Beauty lately? This Friesian-cross came to us through our buyout program looking a bit rough around the edges.
Kory spent hours patiently working through massive “dreadlocks” in his Mane. The result? A breathtaking, flowy mane that proves just how special this horse is. Despite some internet debates about his breed, one look at that hair tells you all you need to know.
He’s learning that hay feeders aren’t scary and is quickly becoming a shelter favorite!
A Special Shoutout to Our Sponsor: Cell Yea!

We are so excited to partner with Cell Yea! Taking care of ourselves is just as important as taking care of the horses. Cell Yea is generously donating 20% of every order to Horse Plus.
Even better? If we hit 100 orders this month, they’ll donate an extra $1,000, which is enough to save another horse from the auction!
Cold Snaps & New Arrivals

The temperature dropped to 30 degrees this week, and just as the frost set in, we received six abandoned puppies from Hickman County. They are safe, warm and getting all the belly rubs they can handle in our Vet Barn. We also did some “cow wrangling” to move our steers to a warmer pen, turns out, Tawnee still has those ranch skills!

From triumphant adoptions to the daily grind of rescue care, this episode captures the heart, hustle and hope that drives Horse Plus Humane Society.
