It has been a whirlwind week at Horse Plus Humane Society, and if there is one thing we have learned, it is that rescue work is never just about one thing. It is a mix of muddy boots, joyful “I do’s,” community spirit, and the occasional curveball that keeps us on our toes!
From classroom visits to finding forever homes for our long-eared friends, here is the latest from the shelter.

The “I Can’t Choose” Special: Triple Adoptions
We had an incredibly busy day in the round pen with three adoption appointments and the results were absolutely heartwarming for everyone involved!
Amelia, our beautiful Navajo Pony, finally found her perfect match with an experienced Mustang owner and is officially where she belongs after months at the shelter.
The joy continued when Heidi came in looking for a single companion for her horse at home but ended up falling so deeply in love with both Firefly and Badger that she decided she simply couldn’t leave one behind, letting them both ring the adoption bell together.
To top off the day’s successes, it wasn’t just about the horses, as our sweet rescue cat Pumpkin also officially headed off to start a brand new life with a wonderful forever family.
Cowboy Goes to School
One of the highlights of the episode was taking Cowboy down to Centerville Christian School. There is nothing quite like seeing a group of kids light up when they get to meet a horse up close.
Cowboy was a total professional, soaking up all the “lovings” and pettings from the students. We love these moments because teaching the next generation about animal rescue is how we ensure a kinder future for all creatures.
The Reality Check: Scams & Hard Work
Not every moment is a win, and that’s part of the journey. Being a non-profit means every dollar counts, which made it sting even more when a Facebook Marketplace scam dashed our hopes for a much-needed dog kennel.
After heading out to pick it up, we found nothing but a vacant lot and a ghosted seller, a frustrating reminder to stay vigilant. But we didn’t let it slow us down. Even rescues face setbacks and bouncing back is all part of the mission!
Back at the barn, our team was hard at work with Elijah the farrier trimming hooves for nearly a dozen residents, including a very fidgety donkey named Dino who eventually got his fresh pedicure.
Meanwhile, our small animal manager Dawn and vet assistant Emily kept the facility sparkling by deep-cleaning stalls and sanitizing every water bowl to keep our rescues cool and healthy.
Amidst all the elbow grease, we also took a joyful moment to celebrate Dawn’s 5th Anniversary with Horse Plus, marking her amazing journey from a dedicated volunteer to our indispensable Grant Manager.
Coming Up: A Rescue Like No Other
The auction is just around the corner, and things are getting intense. Even though we have faced some hurdles with the auction banning our organization, we haven’t given up. We found a way to “dig a tunnel through the hill” to get these horses to safety.
Next week’s episode is going to be one of our biggest yet, featuring a rescue of more horses than we have ever saved at once. You won’t want to miss the episode of what happened behind the scenes!
