A Baby Is Born!

Horse Shelter Heroes – S7E14

At the shelter, every day brings something unexpected. Some moments are joyful, others challenging but all of them matter. This episode captures the heart of rescue in motion, from a brand new life entering the world to animals finding the futures they deserve.

Here’s the “mane” event of what’s been happening down at the shelter!

🎥 Watch the full episode here: Welcome to the World, Little One I Horse Shelter Heroes – S7E14

A “Diamond” in the Rough: Welcome to the World!

The best surprises happen in the early morning hours. We walked into the pasture to find that our girl Diamond had a special delivery: a beautiful, healthy baby boy!

The little foal was still finding his footing, wobbly but full of life. He had already started nursing and showed all the early signs of strength, even as the team kept a close watch on Diamond’s milk production. With extra care, supplemental feeding and a lot of attention, both mom and baby are being supported every step of the way.

It is one of those moments that reminds everyone why this work matters.

Safe Travels, Leo!

One of our most unique rescues, Leo the Guanaco, found his forever family this week! Leo is blind and was understandably a bit nervous, but the wonderful folks from fell in love with him instantly.

Because Guanacos are natural herd animals, Leo is heading to a home where he’ll be spoiled and integrated with other llamas and alpacas. Watching him load up into the trailer to start his new life was a real tear-jerker.

Training Triumphs: Hunter the Mustang

Our resident horse gentler has been putting in the work with Hunter, a 5-year-old Mustang who is proving that patience really does pay off. Even though it’s only his second session in the round pen, the progress has been nothing short of incredible.

We’ve been focusing on the vital goal of building a foundation of trust and getting him comfortable enough to have his feet handled for the farrier. The highlight of the day and a massive win for his training was when Hunter took five confident steps toward his gentler completely on his own accord.

It’s those small, unprompted moments of connection that remind us why we do what we do!

Hard Work & Heavy Lifting

Behind the scenes, the “doers” of Horse Plus, Justin and the crew, have been sweating it out to build our new BLM horse pens. We’re installing heavy-duty 6-foot panels and setting posts in concrete to ensure we are ready for the wilder arrivals headed our way.

It is hard work but it is necessary. Because preparation means safety. And safety means more lives can be saved.

SPRING FLING ADOPTION EVENT!

Get ready to mark your calendars because the Spring Fling Adoption Event is officially happening from April 20th through the 23rd!

We have some absolutely huge news to share: all adoption fees are completely waived for the entire week, making it the perfect time to bring home your new best friend.

To make sure every animal and potential adopter gets the time they deserve, adoptions are by appointment only so be sure to give us a call right away to schedule your visit and join the celebration!

Whether you’re looking for a donkey like Dora or a horse like Hunter, help us give these animals the forever homes they deserve. Let’s make this Spring the season of second chances!

Why This Work Matters

From a newborn foal taking his first steps, to a once forgotten animal finding a home, to a Mustang learning to trust, this is what rescue looks like.

It is early mornings, long days and constant care.

It is teamwork, patience and hope.

And most of all, it is about giving animals the life they deserve.

Be Part of Their Story

None of this is possible without support.

Every rescue, every medical check, every safe landing like Leo’s and every new beginning like this little foal depends on people who choose to care.

If you believe in giving these animals a second chance, please consider donating today. Your support helps provide feed, medical care, shelter and the time they need to heal.

Together, we can keep showing up for them!

Annie Finds A Home After Surgery

Horse Shelter Heroes – S7E13

Every day at the shelter brings a mix of challenges, small victories and moments that remind us exactly why this work matters.  We’ve got everything from medical mysteries to “major” staff shake-ups to share with you.

Whether it’s a tiny foal on the way or a high-stakes surgery, there’s never a dull moment when you’re rescuing lives!

Medical Wins & New Beginnings

Our veterinary team has been working overtime to give our newest rescues a second chance. We started the morning with Annie, a brave three-year-old gray who needed a standing sedation procedure to remove a suspicious mass.

While any mention of the “C-word” (cancer) is scary, the surgery went perfectly and we’re hopeful for clean margins!

We also took a closer look at Miracle, a sweet dog with a badly injured front leg. X-rays confirmed our suspicions: an old, severe break that didn’t heal quite right.

While she may always have a hitch in her giddy-up, we’re doing everything possible to keep her comfortable and loved.

Halter Training 101

Trey took us behind the scenes for some POV training with our “youngsters.” Out in the barn, it’s all about connection. A new group of young, skittish horses begins their journey toward halter training.

With slow movements, quiet encouragement and a focus on safety, the team works to show them that people can be trusted. Even the most nervous horses start to relax, taking those first important steps toward a life where they can be handled, cared for and eventually adopted.

The “Thunder Chicken” & Better Space for Rescue Horses

It wasn’t all serious business! We took a quick break for a “Horse Plus Sneak Attack” to track down a Thunder Chicken, a very loud wild turkey,  strutting around the property.

On a more industrial note, we’re prepping to install heavy-duty, 6-foot panels designed for BLM horses. The goal is simple: reduce stress and create a calm, efficient environment where horses can transition smoothly from transport to care.

Every upgrade means a better experience for the animals who need it most.

The Big Announcement (Wait, What?!)

The shelter was buzzing with a shocking rumor: Tawnee and Jason are leaving! The staff was in a total tailspin… who would tell the dad jokes? Who would lead the rescues? Justin even started planning his takeover as the new boss!

…But then we checked the calendar. April Fools! Tawnee and Jason aren’t going anywhere. They’ve been saving lives since 2003 and they aren’t stopping now!

Happy Tails!

The best news of the week? Annie found her forever home! Her new family fell in love with her calm spirit and beautiful “flea-bitten” coat.

We also have Diamond officially on foal watch, expecting her little one mid-to-late summer!

Rescue. Rehabilitate. Rehome. Repeat.

This episode captures the heart of what the team does every single day:
giving frightened horses a chance to trust again, providing critical medical care and preparing them for brighter futures.

At Horse Plus Humane Society, every horse matters and every story is still being written.

We are deeply grateful for your continued support, your generosity and the compassion you show through every donation and every view.

Thank you for being part of this journey with us and for helping give these horses the second chances they deserve!

Horse Shelter Heroes – S7E12

Welcome back to the shelter, everyone! It’s been a whirlwind of a week here at Horse Plus Humane Society, filled with everything that makes rescue work both the most rewarding and the most heartbreaking job in the world. From tiny paws to giant hooves and even a surprise guest with a long neck, our team has been moving at a gallop!

Here’s the scoop on what’s been happening at the shelter!

🎥 Watch the full episode here: Horse Shelter Heroes -S7E12

The “March Buyout” & A Surprise Guest

Our latest “buyout” day was a marathon. We brought in 22 horses, a mini pony, and… an alpaca! Yes, you read that right. We never know what’s going to step off that trailer (that’s the “Plus” in Horse Plus!), and meeting our new, 100% blind alpaca friend was a highlight for the whole team.

While we love the excitement of new rescues, many of these animals arrived in tragic condition. Our veterinary team worked tirelessly to triage, treat and provide comfort to these animals who had been through so much.

A Gentle Farewell to Mary Poppins

Sometimes, the greatest act of love we can provide is a peaceful goodbye. We met a beautiful senior mare we named Mary Poppins. Sadly, she arrived in horrific shape, unable to stand or use her hind legs.

To alleviate her suffering, we gave her the “last act of kindness.” While our hearts are heavy, we are grateful she spent her final moments surrounded by love and soft hay rather than in the terrifying slaughter pipeline.

Double the Trouble: Kenneth & Cheetah

In much happier news, our kitten room was buzzing! Remember the 17 cats we rescued from a local cruelty case? They are thriving!

This week, we introduced a potential adopter to “twins” Kenneth and Cheetah. These sweet boys are living proof that even the darkest situations can have a bright, purring ending.

Feeling the Vibes: MagnaWave Therapy

We’re always looking for new ways to help our residents heal. This week, we tried PEMF MagnaWave therapy, which uses electromagnetic pulses to reduce inflammation and increase blood flow.

From Admiral, who turned into a total zen-diva during his session and to Twilight with her unique roach back, the horses seemed to truly relax. Even a few of our hardworking staff members gave it a try to soothe their own sore muscles!

Looking Ahead: The Wild Horse Rez Challenge

The big news? The Wild Horse Rez Challenge is returning! We had a high-energy meeting with last year’s champion, Trey, to start planning. We’re looking to streamline the event, bring in more trainers and most importantly, get more wild horses gentled and into loving homes. Stay tuned for updates!

Every Animal Deserves a Second Chance

None of this…. the hay, the life-saving medical care or the peaceful transitions is possible without YOU. Thank you for being part of our Horse Plus family and helping us give these animals the dignity they deserve!

Your generosity, whether through donations, volunteering or spreading awareness, truly transforms lives every single day. Every gift, big or small, helps us reach more horses, ponies, alpacas and cats who need a second chance.

We are endlessly grateful for the way you stand by us, proving that no animal is ever truly alone when they have a community like ours!

The Lucky Day Adoption Event

Horse Shelter Heroes – S7E11

What happens when you mix a St. Patrick’s Day adoption event, a surprise Tennessee snowstorm and a pregnant mare who refuses to move? You get one wild day at Horse Plus Humane Society!

From unexpected emergencies to heartwarming adoptions, it was a powerful reminder of why we do what we do.

The Diamond Dilemma

The day started with a bit of a mystery. Diamond, a mare from our January rescue group, was acting very strange.Usually a bit wild and difficult to handle, she was suddenly standing perfectly still, looking at her belly and holding her tail at an odd angle.

Because she came from a rough background, we couldn’t easily ultrasound her but the physical signs, the “dropped” belly and defined shape have us on Baby Watch. We’re moving her to a cleaner “maternity” lot just in case. Stay tuned for a potential new arrival!

A Huge Shoutout to Nila!

Our new break room is officially “popping” thanks to the incredible generosity of one of our favorite supporters, Nila!

She sent over a gorgeous spring-themed setup to brighten our days featuring a much-needed coffee maker and a full set of matching tablecloths, plates and napkins.

We even got the cutest stirrers you’ve ever seen and some new training sticks though if you ask Jacob, he’d tell you he was convinced they were actually lightsabers!

Quarantine Cleared!

Despite the freezing weather, our vet team was hard at work rechecking three pastures of quarantine horses to see who was healthy enough to join the general population and finally find a home.

We are thrilled to share that eleven horses were officially cleared to move down to training!

While we had a few setbacks with four horses staying behind to finish treating some nasal discharge and minor lung sounds, we always prioritize their safety and take no chances with their health.

The “Cat in the Wall” Crisis

In the middle of the day, things took a wild turn… a cat escaped and ended up trapped inside a wall! What followed was a mix of teamwork, laughter and determination as Cydney carefully navigated tight spaces (and a few spiders) to bring the frightened feline to safety.

Mission accomplished!

The Lucky Day Adoption Event

Despite the freezing St. Patrick’s Day weather, the adoption event turned into something truly unforgettable. Families showed up with open hearts, ready to give rescued animals the second chances they deserve.

Throughout the day, horses found loving homes with experienced adopters, previously unhandled horses connected with patient trainers and meaningful stories of loss, love, and new beginnings were shared.

One of the most touching moments came when Bella was adopted by a family who had recently lost a horse that looked just like her—a full-circle connection that felt meant to be.

By the end of the day, 20 animals, including horses, dogs, and cats were adopted into loving homes.

That’s 20 second chances.
20 fresh starts.
20 lives forever changed.

Why Rescue Matters

The work doesn’t stop here. With more rescues arriving and more animals waiting, the team is already preparing for the next big event.

Don’t worry if you missed out on this one! Our Spring Fling Adoption Event is happening on April 19th.

Every rescue, every medical check, every adoption, it all adds up to something bigger. Since its founding, Horse Plus Humane Society has helped save thousands of animals from uncertain futures.

And days like this? They’re proof that compassion, dedication and a little bit of luck can change everything.

Happy Goodbyes & Sweet Reunions

Horse Shelter Heroes – S7E10

What a week! From major facility upgrades to emotional “welcome home” moments, the energy at the shelter has been at an all-time high. We’ve been busy playing matchmaker for our rescues and preparing for some very special newcomers. Here is the inside scoop on what’s been happening at Horse Plus Humane Society.

A $30,000 Milestone: Saving Wild Hearts

We are jumping for joy thanks to an incredible anonymous donor who stepped forward with a $30,000 gift! This donation allowed us to purchase heavy-duty, professional-grade panels. We are so deeply grateful for this life-saving support that helps us provide a safe haven for our horses!

Why is this a game-changer? Our standard 5ft panels simply weren’t sturdy enough to safely house wild horses from the BLM.

Now, we can take in “authority sale” horses, those most at risk of ending up in the slaughter pipeline, and provide them a safe landing spot until they find forever homes, without the usual government holding restrictions.

Matchmaking Success: Harold, Twilight & Wilbur

The adoption appointments were back-to-back this week, and the results were absolutely beautiful. First up were Harold and Twilight, an adorable duo who found their forever home with a family dedicated exclusively to rescues.

Harold, a sweet three-year-old donkey, completely stole their hearts with his gentle nature, and even though his skin still needs some extra TLC, his new family is more than ready to shower him with love.

Then there is Wilbur, a high-strung but precious pony who is moving on to a home where he will grow up alongside a lucky little boy. We know that with consistent daily handling and plenty of “twofer” treats, Wilbur is going to be the ultimate childhood companion.

Special Guests: Dr. Dee & Sadie’s Return

With Dr. Lydia heading off to Japan, we welcomed Dr. Dee, an equine vet with 23 years of experience, to tour the facility.

She jumped right in to help Lincoln, a drafty struggling with “scratches” (a fungal/bacterial skin infection). Her advice? A little haircut for his feathers and some consistent exercise to help with his leg swelling.

Perhaps the most emotional moment was the return of Sadie. After a long drive, this sweet pup was reunited with the family that spent months winning her love.

Seeing her transition from “survival mode” to playing like a puppy again with her old friends brought tears to everyone’s eyes.

Dental Days for Grant

Finally, we gave Grant, our 27-year-old quarantine horse, some much-needed relief. He had severe “sharps” on his teeth that made eating a struggle. While his age means we have to be careful not to over-file, Dr. Dee was able to smooth out the rough spots so he can chew comfortably and finally start putting on some healthy weight.

Adoption Appointments

The episode ended with a flurry of adoption appointments during the “It’s Your Lucky Day” adoption event. Adoption fees were waived, and multiple animals, including Molly and Indigo.

At Horse Plus, no two days are the same. From playful reunions to life-saving medical care, every moment reminds us why this work matters. Follow along as more stories unfold on Horse Shelter Heroes, where every hoof, paw, and heart gets the love it deserves.

Four Horses Find Forever Homes

Horse Shelter Heroes – S7E9

There is something truly special happening at the Horse Plus Humane Society lately! Our latest episode of Horse Shelter Heroes was a whirlwind of emotional reunions, life-saving medical care and the kind of “happily ever afters” that make every long day worth it.

From old friends returning to the fold to brand-new beginnings for our rescues, here is the scoop on what’s been happening at the world’s largest full-circle shelter.

Homecomings & Heartfelt Adoptions

We were over the moon to welcome back some “Horse Plus Royalty”, former staff members Caleb and Shelby! These two actually fell in love right here at the shelter years ago. Now, they’ve returned with their growing family to adopt Annabelle, a sweet soul who looks just like a beloved horse Shelby lost years ago.

Talk about a full-circle moment!

Beyond the familiar faces, we also celebrated some truly incredible new matches this week. Major and Rudolph, two handsome fellas with hearts of gold, are headed to a therapeutic farm in Hohenwald where they will spend their days helping people heal.

Then there is Italy, now known as Lahi, our former “wild child” who completely transformed into a sweetheart and found her perfect person in a local adopter.

Finally, Satie’s big adventure took her on a 10-hour road trip down to Florida, after surviving a brutal ice storm, she is finally reuniting with the family that loves her for a life of sunshine and no more harsh winters.

High-Stakes Healing

Intake days are always a rollercoaster of emotions, and this latest round was no exception as our team and Registered Vet Techs worked tirelessly to evaluate 12 new arrivals rescued from the slaughter pipeline.

While most of the group looks healthy and promising, we navigated some truly intense moments that remind us why we do this work.

In one surprising turn of events, we discovered a “hidden” injury on a horse that appeared to be a brand, only to find it was actually a deeply embedded cactus that we were able to clear away.

Sadly, we also had to make some heartbreaking choices, like saying goodbye to a mule with a devastating and painful leg injury. To honor our mission of protecting the helpless, we provided him with the last act of kindness to ensure he wouldn’t suffer another moment of pain.

A Huge Shoutout to Zoetis!

It felt like a huge surprise in our vet hospital! A massive thank you to Zoetis for their incredibly generous donation of brand-new vaccines, dewormers and life-saving medications.

As a non-profit, these “non-negotiables” are a huge expense and this gift allows us to provide the absolute best care to every animal that walks through our doors.

What’s Next?

Feeling lucky? Our St. Patrick’s Day Adoption Event is right around the corner! Fees are waived, but slots are filling up fast. If you’ve been waiting for a sign to find your new best friend, this is it!

The Mission Continues

Rescue work is never predictable. One moment the team is comforting an injured animal in its final moments. The next they are celebrating an adoption or preparing a horse for its forever home.

But every single day shares the same goal: Rescue. Shelter. Protect

And for thousands of horses and animals, that mission means a second chance at life.

Remembering a Rescue That Changed Everything

Horse Shelter Heroes – S7E8

Every day at Horse Plus Humane Society, the mission is simple but powerful: rescue, shelter, and protect horses and other animals in need. In this episode of Horse Shelter Heroes, the team experiences a full day that captures both the challenges and the triumphs of animal rescue.

From lifesaving medical care to emotional goodbyes and joyful adoptions, this episode reminds us why rescue work matters.

Harold’s Big Step Toward a New Home

The morning begins with Harold, an almost three year old standard donkey who arrived through the shelter’s buyout program. Today is an important milestone for him: his castration surgery, which helps prepare him for adoption.

Dr. Lydia carefully administers anesthesia and performs the procedure smoothly. While the sounds of surgery can be unsettling for people, it is a routine step that ensures Harold can move forward toward a healthier and happier future.

After surgery, Harold wakes up safely in a spacious recovery area where he can rest and regain his strength. One more animal is now closer to finding a loving home.

Turning a Cold Day into a Cozy Space

Meanwhile, the team tackles a different kind of project. With winter temperatures making the usual lunch area too cold, staff members decide to transform an empty room into a new temporary break space.

With donated items, folding tables and a little creativity, the room quickly becomes a warm gathering place where the team can sit together, relax and recharge. At Horse Plus, nothing goes to waste and even the smallest donation finds a purpose.

A Difficult Loss After a Brave Fight

Not every rescue story ends the way everyone hopes.

A young goat that was surrendered to the shelter needed an emergency C section after a difficult birth. The veterinary team worked tirelessly to save the baby, performing surgery and attempting to stimulate breathing for nearly half an hour.

Sadly, despite their best efforts, the baby did not survive.

The mother, however, is recovering well and receiving the care she needs. Situations like this are heartbreaking but they highlight the reality of rescue work and the dedication of the team who fight for every life.

Two Special Horses Get a Second Chance

Later in the day, excitement fills the shelter as potential adopters arrive to meet two beloved horses, Rudolph and Major.

The couple runs a therapeutic farm and is looking for calm, gentle horses that can help people heal from trauma. After spending time with them, they fall in love with the horses’ kind personalities and begin discussing how they would fit into their program.

For the staff, moments like this are bittersweet. They grow attached to the animals they care for, but seeing them move on to loving homes is the ultimate goal.

Remembering a Rescue That Changed Everything

One touching moment comes when the team opens a piece of artwork sent by a longtime adopter.

The painting captures a Thoroughbred rescued from an auction years ago. At the time, the horse had been discarded after racing and was on his way to slaughter. Thanks to a quick decision and a compassionate heart, he was saved.

Rescue does not always mean a perfect ending. Sometimes it simply means giving an animal peace, comfort and dignity when they need it most.

And that still matters.

Playtime for Two Energetic Labs

The episode is not all serious moments though.

Ben and his dad, Buster Brown, two playful Labrador Retrievers, get to stretch their legs in the dog park. Watching them run, chase and play is a joyful reminder of how much animals thrive when they are given care, attention, and space to be themselves.

Both dogs are full of energy and still looking for their forever homes.

The Perfect Match for Lily & Winnie

The episode ends on a wonderful note.

A couple visiting the shelter is looking for a larger horse that fits their riding needs. After spending time with several horses, they form a connection with Lily and another mare named Winnie.

Instead of choosing just one, they decide to adopt both horses, giving them a second chance and a new life together.

For the staff, seeing animals leave the shelter with loving families is the most rewarding moment of all!

Why Rescue Matters

From surgeries and medical care to heartbreaking losses and joyful adoptions, this episode shows the true heart of rescue work.

At Horse Plus Humane Society, every animal matters. Whether it is helping a donkey recover from surgery, comforting a grieving mother goat, or celebrating an adoption, the mission remains the same.

Rescue. Shelter. Protect.

And thanks to the dedication of the team and the support of compassionate people everywhere, thousands of animals have been given the second chance they deserve!

An Unexpected Surgery

Horse Shelter Heroes – S7E7

No two days are ever the same here at Horse Plus Humane Society. In this episode of Horse Shelter Heroes, we faced heartbreak, hope, mud, emergencies and miracles all in one powerful day.

Since 2003, when we started this rescue with a mission to stop horses from shipping to slaughter, we have helped save more than 15,000 precious lives. Our mission has never changed. We will always rescue, shelter and protect the helpless.

This episode shows exactly what that looks like.

12 Lives Off the Trailer

We welcomed 12 horses through our buyout program. As they stepped off the trailer, it was clear many of them needed immediate help. Some were blind. Some had visible wounds. Others showed signs of long term neglect and structural issues.

We carefully moved each horse through intake. Microchipping. X-rays. Vaccinations. Pain medication. Food and fresh water. Full veterinary exams.

It is never easy to see animals arrive in this condition. But because of your support, we are able to say yes when they need us most.

The Wisdom of an Old Mustang

Among the new arrivals is an older gelding who quietly reveals a surprise. After examining his teeth and completing his evaluation, we discovered he carries a Mustang tattoo.

Despite his age, he is sound, respectful and full of quiet dignity. His heart and lungs are strong. His x-rays look good. He simply needs a chance.

We truly believe senior horses have so much wisdom to offer. Age is not a flaw. It is a gift.

A Sick Little Red Mare

A five year old red mare arrives with thick nasal discharge and eye drainage. Though her lungs still sound clear, she is clearly battling an upper respiratory infection.

The team vaccinates her to protect against additional illness and sends off diagnostics to identify the cause. Early intervention gives her the best chance at a full recovery.

Major and Harold’s Checkups

Major, the mud loving problem child, has been limping. The team performs radiographs and a full evaluation to rule out anything serious. Thankfully, compared to many incoming cases, he is in great shape!

Harold, a young donkey who has been lying down more than usual, also receives x-rays and bloodwork. With castration scheduled soon, we want to ensure he is completely healthy before anesthesia. Every detail matters.

A Tiny Goat’s Emergency C Section

We also took in a very young goat who had been bred far too early. X-rays showed her baby was too large to deliver safely. She needed an emergency C section.

The veterinary team moves quickly into surgery.

The procedure goes smoothly, and to everyone’s surprise, the baby still has a heartbeat. What follows is an intense effort to stimulate breathing oxygen, rubbing, fluids, nonstop encouragement. As long as there is a heartbeat, there is hope.

This is what rescue looks like. Exhausting. Emotional. Worth it.

Orphaned Kittens & Happy Adoptions

In the middle of emergencies, life keeps moving.

Tulip, one of our border collie puppies, found her forever home. Two orphaned kittens arrived after losing their mother and now require round the clock bottle feeding every two hours.

From horses to goats to dogs to kittens, we are here for them all.

Training for the Future

We also continued training work with Rudolph, helping him build confidence under saddle. Rescue is just step one. Rehabilitation and preparation for adoption are just as important so each animal can succeed in their next chapter.

What This Episode Really Shows

Some days bring adoptions. Some bring emergencies. Most bring both.

There are muddy stalls to clean. Medical charts to review. Babies to resuscitate. Frightened horses to reassure.

Behind every task is a team that refuses to look away from suffering.

In a perfect world, Horse Plus Humane Society would not need to exist.

But until that day comes, we will keep showing up for the blind, the sick, the elderly, the unwanted and the overlooked.

Because every life matters. And we will never stop fighting for them.

A Long Awaited Buyout Arrival

After last month’s brutal ice storm delayed transport, a new group of horses finally arrived for buyout week. Thankfully, none appeared critical at first glance, but intake day always reveals deeper stories.

With no veterinarian on site that day, the team performed detailed initial assessments including physical exams and x-rays to identify urgent needs. Dental issues were widespread.

Several horses showed severely worn or missing teeth, painful mouth conditions and signs of long term neglect. One horse displayed a possible kissing spine. Another had concerning hoof overgrowth and potential ringbone.

While more veterinary review is needed, one thing was clear: these horses needed help and they arrived at the right place.

Buyout days are about intercepting horses from the slaughter pipeline and giving them a real chance. These horses now have that chance.

Bear’s New Beginning

Rescue week brought another happy ending.

Bear, a gentle soul of a dog who came from animal control, found his forever home. Justin, his adopter, instantly connected with his calm, sweet demeanor and knew he was the one.

Moments like Bear’s adoption remind us that compassion extends beyond species. Every life matters. Every safe landing is worth celebrating.

Friends of Humane-ity Gala Is Coming!

Big rescues require big support!

Planning is underway for the upcoming Friends of Humanity Gala, a Valentine themed fundraising event hosted at the Horse Plus education center. Think red carpet entrance, photo booth, live music, dancing, dinner and powerful stories from the rescue.

Every ticket helps fund buyouts, medical care, feed, training and second chances. Because without community support, none of this is possible…

Rudolph’s Second Chance

Meet Rudolph, an 8 year old Quarter Horse rescued during a previous buyout.

Quiet, curious, and a little mischievous, Rudolph has been progressing beautifully through groundwork training. In this episode, we see his first saddling session since arriving.

Instead of rushing him, his trainer focuses on patience and calm communication. When Rudolph gets tense, pressure is released. When he responds correctly, he is rewarded.

It is a powerful reminder that healing is not just physical. Many horses need someone to rebuild their confidence.

Rudolph is currently available for adoption and showing incredible potential for the right partner.

Remington Finds Her Person

One of the most joyful moments of the week was Remington’s adoption appointment.

Her adopter, Jamie, had been following Horse Plus for years, waiting for the perfect time and the perfect horse. When she met Remington, she knew. The connection was immediate.

Remington is heading to a boarding facility where she will have plenty of space, friends and a loving home. Watching a rescued horse step into a new life never gets old. This is why we do what we do.

Training the Forgotten Dogs

Rescue does not stop with horses.

This episode also features Bella and Dolly, two shy dogs likely lacking early human interaction. A professional trainer stepped in using positive reinforcement techniques to gently build trust.

For fearful animals, progress can be slow. Tossing treats, respecting body language and rewarding bravery may seem simple, but it creates life changing results. With time and consistency, these girls will learn that people can be safe.

Pizza, Teamwork & Purpose

Between dental exams, hoof checks, training sessions and adoption appointments, the team paused for a simple tradition: pizza during buyout week!

It may seem small, but moments like that keep everyone energized during long, emotional days. Rescue work is demanding. Community makes it sustainable.

What This Episode Really Shows

This week was not dramatic. It was not chaotic. It was steady, thorough and deeply meaningful.

Eleven horses evaluated.
Multiple medical issues identified.
Training progress made.
One confirmed adoption.
More potential adopters considering their future partners.

Each step moves a horse further away from slaughter and closer to safety.

That is the mission of Horse Plus Humane Society.

Rescue. Shelter. Protect.

If you want to be part of the next success story, consider adopting, donating, or attending the gala. Lives truly depend on it.

Life After the Ice Storm

A brutal ice storm pushed the team to the limit. Quarantine horses were rechecked, cultures came back clear and seven horses were officially cleared for general population.

A few lingering sniffles meant extended quarantine for some, but safety always comes first. Frozen pipes, power outages, slippery footing and nonstop weather kept everyone on their toes, yet the animals stayed safe and cared for.

Meet the Voices Behind the Phones

Hallie, the receptionist and CEO assistant, shares what it takes to keep Horse Plus running behind the scenes. From answering surrender calls during power outages to coordinating intakes, adoptions and buyouts, she helps turn moments of crisis into hope. For her, working at Horse Plus is a lifelong dream realized!

The Media Team Behind the Mission

While the rescue work never stops, neither does the media team. Through computer crashes, offline footage, missing music files and long days bouncing between workstations, they stay determined to share these stories with the world.

Every episode is crafted with care so supporters can see exactly how their support is changing lives, even when technology tries its hardest to get in the way.

Healing Happens Every Day

The veterinary team handles it all, from ear infections and neuter prep to in depth exams for fearful dogs. Satie, a terrified stray caught during the ice storm, arrived with no medical history but plenty of treatable issues. With careful sedation, diagnostics and compassionate care, she began her path toward healing and trust.

Teaching Trust One Step at a Time

Newly cleared horses start fresh with patience and respect. Calm, halter broke horses share space with more fearful ones like Hudson, a wild mustang still learning that people can be safe.

Trainers demonstrate how reading body language, slowing down and building confidence step by step creates lasting progress for both horses and handlers.

Keith Is Back!

One of the most meaningful moments of the episode is Keith returning to the shelter on a good day. Surrounded by cards, letters, prayers and encouragement from supporters, Keith opens mail and shares his gratitude.

His presence is a powerful reminder of resilience, community and the deep connection between Horse Plus and the people who stand behind its mission.

Second Chances Made Possible by You

Donor support comes full circle through adoption stories like Whiskey’s, a horse who arrived with serious medical challenges and is now thriving in a loving forever home. Sharing these stories keeps supporters connected to the lives they help change.

This episode closes with full hearts. From rescued animals and dedicated staff to Keith’s return and an outpouring of donor love, Horse Shelter Heroes reminds us that even in the hardest seasons, hope shows up, heals and keeps moving forward.

Thank you for being part of the Horse Plus family. Every rescue, recovery, and reunion is possible because of you!
